I recently upgraded to FCP X from FCP 7 and I’ve run into a bit of a sticky situation regarding the log and transfer workflow for this new final cut. In prior versions, I had become comfortable with using Log and Transfer to cover all of my bases, mostly ingesting, but also importantly renaming the .mov files as they were seen in the finder. This feature was especially important to me since I do a lot of client work where I need to be giving them properly labeled .mov files to simplify search options in OSX.

From what I can see, this new log and transfer in FCPX does not rename the file as they are seen in the finder, it only labels them as an event with the date/time the file was shot/transferred, which does not help me at all. Is there any way to formulate a workflow where I am able to view/label a clip, then ingest and have the clips labeled and good to go as seen in the finder? It would be really helpful for media management outside of Final Cut where I don’t have to waste my time by going and having to rewatch/relabel all of the clips in the finder.

Or can someone please explain to me what the equivalent workflow for log and transfer would be in this new fcp? I feel like I’m missing something where Apple would have essentially eliminated this really useful feature.

    I’m ingesting via HVX200/DVCPRO HD using a P2 reader over USB 2.0

I’m still using FCP7 to get files off my camera cards, discard absolute rubbish, rename and set a destination folder.

I then import into FCPX without adding the files to the event or carrying out any of the auto functions.

With DSLR files I use MPEG Streamclip and transcode ProRes 422-LT. You could rename the files in the folder you have transcoded to.

FCP X is very much a “organize after the ingest”, ie. marking favorite ranges, naming, etc. and unfortunately doesn’t (yet) support writing back metadata (i.e. filenames) to the actual files. While this is quite good for my workflow, I can completely see the shortcomings that it brings to yours.

You might want to take a look at CatDV and see if it would be useful to you:

I would make sure you send feedback to Apple regarding this, and let the know specifically why you need the feature. I have seen a number of other folks put this high on their request list, so the more requests Apple sees the better.

Like Mark, I too use FCP7 to ingest my hdv footage. I can more easily rename organize files that way.

There’s an app called “a better finder rename” that I’ve been using for years that may help. You can use it to batch rename files many different ways. There’s a function that creates serial file names, like Broll_001, Broll_002… It will rename hundreds of files in a few moments.

So after you ingest your footage, you can rename the files in the finder, then re-import them with their new names. It’s an extra step, but with the hundreds of files coming off the camera cards these days, for me it’s the only way to go.

FCX. She tempts me, abuses me, beats me up, makes me feel worthless, then in the end she comes around, helps me get my work done, gives me hope and I can’t stop thinking about her.
