Humm. I had an export be out of sync once, but it was about a second. I haven’t heard of this issue before. A few questions.

1- If you export a stereo mix (rather than roles), is it still out of sync?
2- how long are these timelines typically that go out of sync?
3- Are you able to reproduce this with just the the countdowns without the program?
4- If you reimport the movie back into FCPX can you clearly see the sync issue?
5- What frame rate? Drop frame by any chance?
6- Is this happening with both SD and HD? Only with XDCAM originated material?
5- What version of FCP, Specs, etc.

(OT Shane, thanks for putting out a new podcast. I was about to remove my subscription and then boom, you came out with a new episode. I always appreciate your insights. I even go back and re-listen to old episodes to gleed more nuggets of editing wisdom.)

I’m thinking if I were Apple and going to tweak the interface of FCPX, would I reveal it in screen shots a month and a half early? It seems to me that Apple is VERY secretive about their products before an official announcement and they would be very careful to what is being shown publicly.

Personally, I wouldn’t read to much into these screen shots. The first screen shots of FCPX two years ago at NAB had a audio waveform toggle at the bottom right of the timeline (ala iMovie), which was removed..

I think Logic Pro X and iMovie 10 (which is actually a stripped down version of FCPX) would be better indications of where FCPX is headed. i.e. “flatter” less distracting UI. But much more exciting the changes in workflow: Project Timelines reside in Events and yet have their own database, freely ejectable Library containers, etc.

Indeed, it is very odd, and frankly foolish, that Matrox is not supporting the capture apps when their own web site and literature says they support the Venture Capture Apps. See this page:

Granted, I’m throwing Matrox marketing department under the bus, but it seems like they did that themselves.

When I moved to a thunderbolt iMac I evaluated moving to a Blackmagic solution from my MXO2 Mini. I found that the Matrox actually worked better for monitoring (allowed color adjustment, added pulldown on the fly), but non existent for capture. Blackmagic has an excellent capture tool. Since having my Matrox for about 5 years, I have only needed it for capture once, so I went with the Matrox thunderbolt adapter.

Matrox tech support has been very helpful and responsive.

It is a bummer that Matrox has such inconsistencies.

Matrox unfortunately is not supporting capture when having the FCPX drivers installed. And the capture app is unfortunately only available if you use old non FCPX driver. ( I can’t even get it to work with Premier which it supposedly does.) I’ve reported to Matrox that this seems incredible misleading that they are advertising a capture app that doesn’t work with the current drivers. But don’t get me started.

The other issue is that FCPX requires timecode on a firewire input. Thusly playing through the input on your DV deck work work. So here are two options:

1) copy your VHS to DV tape first then capture the tape in FCPX. – works great.
2) use iMovie to capture. No timecode required.

i’ve got a 2012 iMac, 30″ Cinema display and then I use the Matrox MX02 to feed a 47″ LCD via HDMI and a 15 CRT via s-video.

However, I picked up a mini display port to VGA (works better than HDMI for my LCD) and then I’ll just plug it in and then mirror my second display to it. To do this, option drag one monitor to the other in Display Preferences Arrange, once you set it anytime you plug in that third monitor it will automatically switch your settings back to your mirrored settings.

Works great.

Actually FCPX considers HDV already and “optimized” format, so you can’t optimize further. However, you can always create proxy versions of it. If you are on a older computer proxy is a good way to go.

I actually have done quite a few HDV Projects with FCPX. It went incredibly well. I created camera archives from tape, which I think is a fantastic workflow. Just load your tape, FCPX will take care of rewinding, and bringing in the clips. Then when you access the camera archive it is just like it was card storage.

As a graphic designer I must say that I’m not in complete agreement with the direction Apple took in iOS 7, the icon margins especially. We just dissected some of the elements with my fellow creative director a few minutes ago. Much of it looks amateurish. However, design is very subjective. We were given a few general rules by “our designer” on what is pleasing. Balance. Symmetry. Clear Focus. Variety. Contrast. The rest is fair game and very much dependent on the cultural norms of design.

(A great example of how our culture effects us is my when my son was in 3th grade and leaned I was a designer. He said with great enthusiasm, “So dad, you draw things and get the laminated too!”. To him a piece of artwork was only done when it was laminated.)

Overall however, design is about logical thought and a reason for why something is done the way it is. Sometimes us designers try to do something new and, while it looks great to us, may be a complete disaster to others. That may be the case for some of the design elements for iOS 7. But Apple is now bringing to the masses design trends that were already bubbling. Shadows were overused, as were feathered edges. Embossing is defiantly out. White and airy is all the rage. Photography is also playing a much more prominent role in design as is non photorealistic illustration. (Look at the Vimeo home page. Or Google Chrome start page. Can you say flat!)

I agree too that Microsoft did a very good job with “metro” and they were very good at creating something wasn’t a rip off of iOS, which Android was. With that said, I have to hand it to Apple for putting out iOS 7 the way they did. A very bold move. You can bet that there were and are MANY naysayers at Apple, picking apart the design. Because Apple is full of designers.

(BTW. I think you could apply this thought to FCPX as well. Apple was very bold to put it out there with the simplified interface and dark design. Now when something like Logic X, or Resolve 10 released that minimal black design looks very pro. I’ll bet we see the same thing in the next few years with the “flat” design that we see in iOS 7.)

Also, I happen to be working on a trade show both for a new iPhone app and trying to keep with the iOS 7 flat design is very difficult. It is driving me crazy in fact.

I just noticed that you have an older Mac Pro. This looks like the 2006 model. I just recently retired my 2006 Mac Pro because after 7 years of use it was starting to have some odd issues. Adobe Creative Suite just stopped working and would become unauthorized. Even after a system reinstall. I have seen bad RAM module problems only appear when an App is apparently using a portion of the RAM that is normally not used. Once I couldn’t get the machine to startup unless I rebooted the machine with my PCI cards in a certain slot combination.

I would defiantly say there is a correlation between FCPX and your problem, but it is probably exposing a bad component somewhere on your system.

Machines do fail.
