As far as I can tell you can’t change ins and outs for an audition after it is created in an event (but of course you can once it is in the timeline.)

What I did was mark my favorites first for the shots and then in the browser view show favorites for the shots and then create auditions from there. That way the ins and outs are already set before making the audition.

Once you get your head around it, it can be very helpful for the right project. You can make a quick assembly edit, but know that in each shot you can swap out takes easily.

A bit more explanation: as weird as it may appear, FCP X is doing everything correctly because horizontal pixel sizes are different on different devices.

A 480p or 480i signal can be in the 4×3 aspect ratio:
640×480 (square pixels – ie computer screen)
720×480 (slightly thinner pixels – DV camera)

in 16×9 aspect ratio it is:
853×480 (square pixels – computer screen)
720×480 (anamorphic pixels, or wide pixels – DVD)

Now FCP X will accept files with all these sizes (even thought the square pixel sizes are technically incorrect when working with video, but you can create files in that size just fine).

One gotcha with FCP X is that currently you can’t manually tell a 720×480 clip to be anamorphic unless the clip is encoded that way. When you rip from a DVD most all of them don’t embed the pixel aspect ratio in the clip, therefore you currently need a workaround. Just stretch the SD footage on the x axis 133%. (I’ve been waiting every release for a fix for this from Apple. It has to come soon!)

FCP X is going export SD when you Share > Export Media, as 720×480 with either an anamorphic or non-anamorphic flag set depending on the timeline settings. However when going to Apple devices it will export as the square pixel format, i.e. 640×480 or 853×480.

Humm. What version of FCP are you on? Older versions (I think before 10.0.3) used to have an option in preferences witch let you decide how to handle transitions. Overlap or Use Available Media I believe. If you have one of those old versions make sure “Use Available Media’ is selected.

The behavior now is that if a “full overlap” is needed FCP will warn you.

I would do the normal stuff, trash FCP prefs, repair permissions.

Make sure you can see the compressor settings in ~/library/application support/compressor

If that doesn’t work, trash and redownload Compressor.
If that doesn’t work, trash and redownload Final Cut Pro.

It is a good idea to keep a “fresh” copy of Final Cut and Compressor that hasn’t been launched around.

Unfortunately FCP X won’t let you capture from some live devices, which is what is happening by going Beta (Analog out) to DV to Firewire.

You have two choices:

1-Put a tape in your DV camera and record it. Then FCP X can capture the tape.
2-Use QuickTime Player (not 7) to create a movie recording in the native codec. Use settings like these:

I would just do #2.

Thanks for that. I created the title, but for some reason once in FCP X while I can make a parameter adjustment and it change the highlight, once a keyframe is set in FCP X, setting additional keyframes and making adjustments doesn’t move the highlight.
