I am giving him Quicktime, animation codec with millions of colors+.
My source footage is, as stated before, DV50 PAL. I think what he means by artifacts is that the image seems softly blurred. -
The movie (with alpha) is to be put into a flash presentation for the web. The .flv files are to be made in AE. My client believes were introducing artifacts when putting a D1/DV movie into After Effects when the final output of the composition is to be square pixels. I told him to just interpret my footage as->main->pixel aspect ratio: D1/DV while making the composition in AE Square pixels. Is he right, are we introducing artifacts this way?

I follow you so far, but my DV50 PAL footage is D1/DV (1,07) from FCP (720×576) and not square pixels. I’m afraid that aspect ratio will be wrong if I interpret it as being square pixels in AE? -

I tried that already, exported both QT Animation and .tga-animation with millions of colors +.
I don’t see any difference in the sharpness or quality if I interpret the footage differently, nor if I switch between square and D1/DV in the settings of my AE composition.On another note, though, the .tga animation (and Quicktime with .tga compression) seems a lot sharper than the animation codec.

This should not be a problem. I work in PAL and import 48 kHz 16 bit .aiff files all the time, without having to render..

Excactly what I was afraid of – ProCoder is just a magnificent app when it comes to mpeg-2 compression.
