I agree with you, and I don’t like that part of it, but knowing that I just don’t do it very often.
The majority of the time with an interview or b-roll I don’t have a need to detach the audio.
The over all time I’m saving outweighs the problem. For me.

September 15, 2012 at 3:50 pm in reply to: It’s All Connected — Clip Relationships and The Magnetic Timeline ParadigmDavid, would the “layering” method have the video and audio embedded by default like X or not?
I don’t really see how the X timeline can be discussed fully without dealing with the subject of embedded audio.
Your topic is moving clips around in the timeline.
If I’m moving fewer clips around it’s going to be faster than if I’m moving more clips around.
Interview subject: video of him, boom on one channel, lav on the other. 3 items
B-roll: video of truck going down street, camera mic, nat sound. 2 items
Traditional editing 5 items in timeline,
X, 2 items
[David Lawrence] “2) If “FCPX is “aware” of clip relationships in a way that traditional NLEs are not.”, how does that benefit the editor?”
I’m looking at the relationship of video and audio with the SAME clip, before I even get to the relationship of it with other clips.
I want them to ride together unless I choose to separate them.
I don’t need some random audio of the b-roll truck hanging around at the bottom of the timeline,
I want it to just ride with the truck as one clip. One timeline is “streamlined” by design and one is not.
That is a difference that tends to be ignored.

Bret your video is nice.
It seems much of what sets it apart from a less experience editor trying to do that in-house is your use of motion graphics and animation.
Your AE work outside of X
I like to assemble in X but when you want to take things to the next level you have to get out of the timeline of any NLE
That’s one of the reasons I didn’t mind trying X
I saw that the new Motion (that I have always used) got great reviews at the time.

[David Lawrence] “[tony west] “David, thinking of all these young folks who are starting out on X and really liking it…….at what point do you think they will stop using X ”
When they decide they want to pursue a career making feature films in LA.
Admittedly, this will be a very small percentage of the FCPX user base, but the high-end of the post industry has always been a niche market.”
So if the person is 16 now, let’s say they graduate at 22, that would be 6 years from now.
No telling where the industry will be at that point seems to me. It will be interesting to watch what happens.

David, thinking of all these young folks who are starting out on X and really liking it…….at what point do you think they will stop using X
Seems to me as they use the program and develop their skills on it it will be harder to pull them away from it.

[Walter Soyka] “Why not? Couldn’t it be that FCPX makes easy things easier (assembly)and makes hard things harder (trimming)?”
I don’t know Walter, I have not really found many things hard about X
Different.
But not really hard. I have adjusted to “it’s” way of doing things though.
I’m not really fighting it. I don’t have time.

[Craig Seeman] “This is also why I think Apple will make progress in the “professional” market through attrition. People coming in to the field without pre-established habits will be much more open to it.”
Yes, this is one of the reasons I decided to get on board with it. Young folks seem to really like it and they will be moving up.

[David Lawrence] “The iPhone was completely different than any phone that ever came before it. But regular people could pick it up and start using it with virtually no training. In the computer world, that’s we mean when we say intuitive.”
David, I don’t know about this one, X is about as intuitive as editing can get.
There are children on-line offering tips on it.
X was cracked on for being too simple at first and now too complicated.
It can’t really be both can it?

[Aindreas Gallagher] ” once they trust you, feel like you are properly taking in their concerns, and the earlier the better – once you get to that point you could be banging two salamis together to make the edit for all they care.”
hahaha this is genius A

But your first two probably stops them from getting to 3
