And as so many have pointed out this is a brand new app so its also to be expected. There are a lot of glaring issues with Media Management in FCP 7 that needed to be worked out. I personally think they are on the right track with forcing people to start fresh and rethink their media organization. Have a long way to go before it’s pro-worthy, though.

I’ve been playing around with the Position tool (Keyboard Shortcut “P”) to help in that area. Not exactly the same but pretty useful once you get around the whole “primary storyline” and “secondary storylines” mentality. Check it out in the manual. And if you haven’t gotten a chance to read through the manual it’s definitely worth reading and would quiet some of the fears people are having.

AGREED! I’m an organizational nut and don’t like having unnecessary folders all over the place. I am getting by for now creating folders inside of FCPX in the events and projects areas. Absolutely necessary to maintain some sort of sanity.

Lots of posts about this around here but to get you started, yes, they work great with MacPros. No, they won’t speed up FCP much if it’s the boot drive and not for a scratch disk. OWC is a good place to start looking for one:

What are your original sequence settings?
You should create a new sequence with the settings you want and paste in all your clips from the original sequence. You’ll probably just need to reset the Motion controls for each clip since it sounds like you were working in an SD sequence and all the clips scaled down to adjust for being in an SD sequence. Now this is best case scenario but let’s start there.

A couple ideas:
– Make each photo the exact starting size you want then make each individual photo its own nest. Then you can set the zoom for one nest and Copy with Scaling turned to all the others
– Convert all photos to same width or height. You could then Copy with Scaling turned on
– Use iPhoto to make a slideshow. You’d have to know the exact duration and order of each photo but would work as I’ve done this a bunch
Since all your photos are a different dimension, Final Cut doesn’t have any easy options.

Crashes less and faster on some older macs that don’t have 8 or more cores.

Sounds a bit like corrupt files. Search around on here about using the 7D files with MPEG Streamclip or even compressor, as it’s pretty easy to use. I would try your problem clips in MPEG Streamclip first and see if it’s the file.

I apologize as you are right. When I use subclips I always immediately do a batch export with those clips (this works the same way media manager does in that it ignores the original in and out points and uses the new ones), which makes new files split up for me with new names of what they are. This makes it much easier for me to work with plus allows other editors to use the smaller clips outside Final Cut. I then delete the original master file that the subclips came from as it’s no longer needed. Yes, it is extra work but worth it on larger projects. I remember now that I tried what you are doing years ago and realized it doesn’t work and started exporting them out from then on.

This is where subclips come into play. When you make a subclip, it will do want you are wanting, keep only the in and out points that you want so when you recapture it will only recapture your new in and out.

The firmtek and sonnet cards are good options. I would search on here about the newer 6Gb/s esata cards as they much faster with newer 6Gb/s enclosures and would help you futureproof a bit. I haven’t used one yet so I can’t recommend one.
