The AJA Io is an awesome device for SD video, but was never intended for HD. The Matrox MXO is the solution most people are going with right now if you have a Macbook Pro.

I’d start by deleting the “com.apple.motion.plist” found in your Home Folder > Library > System Preferences and then launch Motion again. If that doesn’t work let us know and maybe we can come up with a few other things to try (third party plugins, codecs, and fonts can all cause similar issues, as can lack of memory, hard drive space or bad RAM).

I agree with the post above: you should break the big 2hr. sequence into smaller sequences (one per scene or section). Once all the editing is finished and approved you can put them all together in a new sequence to master from. Also, don’t keep multiple sequences open as they all use memory and will slow you down.

Just and FYI – we do have an XSAN forum here on the Cow and its an excellent resource for info from actual XSAN users and installers. Of course you’re welcome to post here as well about SAN solutions, but I think you might get more/better responses in the XSAN or FCP forums.

Crucial, OWC, Techworks, transintl.com, and other good companies are selling Mac Pro memory currently. All you have to do is select the computer you are going to buy on their websites and they will match you to the correct memory for it (as specified by Apple).
Jerry’s suggestion are good and I’d go with that. I would consider upgrading to 4gb of RAM though. If you run more than one application at a time you’ll see better performance and less spinning beach-balls (and you will be running more than one application at a time).
I also recommend you upgrade the graphics card to the ATI X1900. Its a lot of bang for the buck and well worth it in my opinion.
If you want Bluetooth and/or Airport be sure to add them when you order as they are not end user upgradable later.

Try clicking on the desktop before going back to FCP. If that doesn’t work, try quitting Soundtrack Pro first. I”m guessing its and issue where the Kona card is being used by Soundtrack Pro and is not being released for FCP to use when you switch back.
Also, I suggest you search/post on the Cow’s AJA Kona forum because its likely someone else is having a similar issue and you might find a more detailed solution.

The 160GB drive works pretty well on the MacBook Pro’s, but if it were me I’d get the 100GB/7200rpm model as it will access system and application files faster and generally speed things up. You do need an external for you captured media/scratch disk. I’d go with a eSATA drive or RAID. You can get a SATA card for your MacBook Pro and attach the external drive to it. Firmtek makes one. There are several good eSATA Drive/RAID manufacturers. You might consider G-Technology.com, Wiebetech and ProMax, but their are several others that are good.

https://www.promax.com/Landing/Storage/index.html#satamaxeOne reason to avoid Firewire drives, besides SATAe being faster, is that you want try to avoid using your Firewire bus for both the camera or capture device (AJA Io for example) and the drive/RAID as they want to be on their own bus, not sharing with the other devices.

You may want to order it with 3gb or else Apple will fill both slots with 1gb RAM sticks and not leave you room to add another (unless you remove one).
