LOL – if you scroll down about 4 posts I just answered this question. Hold on, I paste my previous answer here for you:
VLC Player https://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738 it bypasses the region codes. I wouldn’t change your code to watch a DVD, use VLC instead of Quicktime player and it should work.
The other option is to use something like MacTheRipper to rip the DVD region free to your hard drive: https://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/22715
The last option is to find on the web somewhere, a region free firmware flasher for your SuperDrive (you need a different one for most models and brands).
Unless you can find a region free firmware flasher, on the web somewhere, for your specific drive (Apple changes drives often). I’d say you’re stuck with whatever it is set to now. The only option is to do one of the things I listed above, or buy a replacement drive (internal if you want to use it with iDVD, etc with it).

If you want to save a little money, and gain some space, you could go with the OtherWorld Computing (OWC) 500GB Firewire RAID/Drives https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/firewire/1394/USB/EliteAL/RAID/ Maybe not quite as good as G-RAID, but a lot of bang for the buck. They’ve been making drives for a long time and have been a decent company to deal with.

Having said all that, right now today, I”d go with the G-tech (raid or single drive. SATA, then FireWire). However, the OWC drives are an excellent cost effective option that I wouldn’t hesitate to use for backups, etc. G-Tech is probably overkill for backups unless you’re planning on working off of it regularly.

Not much to go on, but I’d say check to make sure your hard drive is no where close to full. Then startup off of the latest OS installer disk you have for it. Run Disk Utility to repair the startup drive and permissions. Remove anything plugged into you Mac while troubleshooting (printers, firewire drives, etc). Restart and try again.
If not, try a “safe boot’ by holding down the shift key right after you hear the startup chime (you can let go when the little gear icons starts spinning). After it boots try to update again.
If that doesn’t work, boot from the installer disc again and try and archive and install of the OS. Be sure to choose the options to save your files, applications and networks settings. After the install, repair the permissions and drive again, then use the Apple software update to get you up to the latest versions. When its all done, repair the permissions and drive one last time.

Try deleting the Dock prefs found in ~/Library/Preferences/ (they are named com.apple.dock.plist). Just for the heck of it, I’d try repairing your permissions and deleting your caches using something like CockTail: https://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26516 You can also reset or change your Dock preferences using Cocktail, so maybe it’ll work, where the Apple System Preferences aren’t?
If want to dig deeper you can check the following (the Dock application is in there among other things):
“The Dock is located at /System/Library/CoreServices/Dock. If you control-click on it and choose “Show Package Contents”, then navigate to Contents/Resources/, you will find several interesting files. The “Widgets” Dashboard widget, introduced in Mac OS X 10.4.2, is located here, as well as the Dock’s “poof” animation (stored in poof.png), which can be replaced by an alternative animation provided you have an image with suitable dimensions (these can be found on various websites) and superuser privileges.”
Of course, you can always reinstall or archive and install the OS again. A pain, but it’ll work if nothing else. Oh, one other possiblity off the top of my head. Try removing any third party or non-stock Widgets you’ve added.

Welcome back to the light side 🙂
You need to copy off everything to another drive, then reformat your startup drive, and then copy everything back. You can use a great little application called Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the files/system off (you can’t drag and drop the system with OS X. It won’t copy the thousands of invisible files, and so it won’t work).
Having a backup drive with a regularly updated backup of all your important files should be considered mandatory. You can pickup up a 250GB firewire drive for very cheap now. Or what I do on all my Mac’s is to buy an identical drive (to my startup drive) as a secondary drive inside the Mac. I keep a cloned copy of my startup drive on it. I always update that clone before doing any updates to my OS or critical software on my startup drive. That way I can always quickly go back or startup off the other drive to keep working.

Keep your AJA Io for the SD stuff, but its sounds like you need to add a Kona 2, or LH, for working with HD. With the Kona 2 you can up-convert your SD video to use with your HD projects, which your clients might like if you have a lot footage they like to reuse. There’s a slightly used Kona 2 card for sale in the Cow classifieds right now, if you’re interested 🙂
The Io and the Kona 2 or LH work great on the same Mac together, so no worries about that. That’s the setup I use myself.
