You should be able to capture to any codec your Mac and FCP supports capturing to (the Io doesn’t care, it’s just sending a 10-bit uncompressed signal to FCP). The exception would be ones that require a specific hardware capture device (not many of those).
You can do what you’re asking with the Powerbook, but you should capture to (and work off of) a different hard drive than your startup drive. However, you can’t use the Io and a Firewire drive both at the same time using your Mac’s built-in FW ports. You’d need to get a FW card for your Powerbook to run the Firewire drive.

The new Towers will NOT likely be out before the end of the year. If you will be using your Mac to run professional applications, then I’d get the best current model you can right now. Just know that you’ll probably want/need to replace it in a year or so. Many of the major applications (like from Adobe) won’t be converted to Intel in the next few months, so if you need them, go with the current (non-Intel) Mac’s. The current Mac line up works is great and you’re not buying a bad or lower quality machine. For Final Cut Studio, you’ll want the fastest processors, most memory, best graphic cards, and biggest/fastest hard drives (need at least two) you can afford.

Hi Rennie,
While I do shut down much of my equipment when Im done for the day, my Io’s stay on 24/7 and I don’t worry about them at all. As Bob suggests, you should connect them to a good UPS – just like your other expensive decks and computer equipment.

All the drives should be fine as long as you reformat them and make sure the jumpers are correct for how you use them (internal/external). Mac’s do have an AGP slot, but odds are your card will not work. Check with ATI and see if they have a firmware update to make it work on whatever Mac you are getting (I doubt it). Sometimes, you can find a firmware update someone other than ATI has created that will do the job. Search around the Web and see what you can find. However, having said that, if you’re getting a new Mac, then odds are the stock graphic card in it is as good or better than your ATI 9800. Apple also has an option to upgrade to an even better card if you want to spend a little more and buy it from Apple (or a store that does Apple build to order Mac’s). I’m talking about Apple towers here and not iMac’s or MacBook’s – you didn’t say what Mac you were thinking about.

Yes, I knew someone would take issue with what I said. Any computer can get a virus or Trojan Horse. But, my response was simply you’re not going to find any normal person who’s every had one (not in many, many years anyway), so you won’t get any responses to your original question, as its just not a problem. Curtis is right that you should take precautions anyway, and that the Mac is a less attractive target to hackers. I do believe the Mac tends to be more secure than other systems right out of the box. If it wasn’t relatively secure, there would be some virus’ problems even with its small market share in non creative industries (just not hundreds of attempts a day like in the PC world). None the less, keep up-to-date as Curtis mentions.

Vertical is fine for the Xserve RAID’s as stated above. I remember someone used to sell (maybe still do) a device to stand it vertically on the floor (or your desk) so it wouldn’t take up so much space. It is very heavy though and you need to make sure its well secured. Personally, I’d leave it horizontal, but that’s just me.
