Like Raf said, Looks is awesome…and it has a TON more functionality than just what you’re looking for. Amazing plug-in that I use a lot. Well worth the cost. You also get the “Misfire” set of plugs with it that does all the film stuff you’d need!

You can also do all of that in the inspector. Clip your clip in timeline, and the open inspector and yo can keyframe it all in there. BTW, when you use the transform as previously described, you need to click done when finished.

OK…while having an actual project open, I clicked File>New Project and the first screen cap came up. You can clearly see “Set based on first video clip”. If that’s checked, when you drop that first clip into the timeline/project, it’ll set it to the propreties of that clip.
Of course, you can also select custom, and then the option for “other”
I think for what you’re working on, you should just do the set based on first clip option.

When I get a chance, I’ll fire up my machine and get you a screen shot. For those who have dismissed X and haven’t checked it out lately, your only hurting yourself. I hated it at first but I have to say, it’s really very awesome with the new updates and the tons of EFX an plugs available at low cost now.
Remember how FCP 1 started out? Yea…do yourselves a favor and don’t write it off until you’ve really worked with it. It’s different. But that doesn’t make it a toy. It’s really very powerful and growing (back) up very fast.
This is coming from someone who was so shaken by the change that I bought or upgraded Adobe Production Premium Suite and Media Composer and am learning all three (4 if you include FCP legacy) so I can become NLE Agnostic! Each has its strengths. And X? Yea, I’m actually digging it.
Let the flaming begin. I can take it 😉

In fcp x, you set that when you start a new project (timeline) from the project library. Choose “custom” in the dialog that pops up and you can choose your dimensions. X should actually work well for what you’re working on. And there’s a choice in that dialog to tell it to base the timeline on the first clip added, just like legacy.

Do you have any eSATA drives you’d like to use from your old setup? If not, they’re inexpensive and work great! They’re very fast and what we’ve used for years to handle the speed needed for HD Production.
I mention all of this because LaCie has a great eSATA to Thundebolt dock/bridge! $199 and it has two Thunderbolt ports so it can do pass through (doesn’t have to be end of chain) and two eSATA ports. It’s small, aluminum, and looks great too.
You can pick up a GRAID 4tb raid for $279 at B&H and other places right now that has eSATA.
Sure, you can buy TB drives…and they’re nice…but expensive right now! Wait a while and they’ll come down. At least with this device, you an use all of your old, fast, eSATA drives, buy inexpensive eSATA drives, and still take advantage go the speed of TB.
FWIW, you can get TB to FW adaptors and use those FW drives.

Look up “adjustment layer” for fcpx. I think ripple training has a free effect you can download. You add it over your entire project and add the effects to that. Hope that helps!

Check it out…while I was typing that response to you, I got this email from a colleague who’s working in a large market. He’s teaching at a university and works at an ad agency. Thought you might find it interesting:
“Teaching has been a really great experience and you will be happy to know that I have been teaching FCPX as part of the syllabus. I am still very much an Adobe guy and prefer Premiere, BUT… I have found somethings I like about FCPX and will keep it as a valuable tool in my toolbox if you will. Actually, we use FCPX primarily at the ad agency I work at too. Just looking forward to each update from 10.0.5 – 10.0.6 – 10.0.7 and so on… the bugs seem to pile up but once it is all sorted out I think its a decent program. Anyways… that was my lil rant on FCPX”
So…while people may have issues, it is getting out there in the “real world” and the old school folks may want to take notice. It’s just like when FCP first came out….it was considered a toy. And the people who used and loved it brought it to the forefront. We’ll see where it all goes!
