You’ll need a Thunderbolt to FireWire cable. USB is and never was fast enough or capable of capturing DV tapes. It’s always been either FireWire or component. But really, without a FireWire input on your machine, I’m not sure it’ll work. You’ll need a capture card or something.

Check out the LaCie thunderbolt eSATA hub! $200 and it allows for two eSATA drives connected at a time. You can pick up a GRAID 4tb for about $250. And single 1tb externals of good quality eSATA for about $100. ESATA has always been the go to before TB and you likely have a few you’ve been using.
I’ve got one and I love it! Very fast and works flawlessly. Until those TB drives come down in cost, this is great and allows you to use drives you’ve already got.
My 2 cents.

February 23, 2013 at 3:41 pm in reply to: Is it possible to export and edit simultaneously? Was just going to say that! X does this and does it well. Hate it if you like, but until you really use it for a few important edits and fully embrace it, you just don’t understand how well it really works.
Hey, I’m still using Legacy, Pr, Avid a little bit…but I really like using FCP X and have used it more and more. Especially with all the plugins available and using Motion to create transitions, effects, and titles that are published into X to use over and over again.
It’s really about choice, and I’m glad we have many. But you may find that it’s at least worth a good try with it.

You talking about the effect that you see all over TBS? Looks like a sign swinging down? If you’ve got FCP X, there’s a plugin called tramsimatic from SquidEFX that does exactly that and more! Super easy to use and looks great. Otherwise, you’ll need Motion or After Effects to do it.

February 16, 2013 at 4:02 pm in reply to: Has anyone used log and transfer in FCP7 with a Canon t4i? How did you do it?T4i is a great cam but I haven’t logged and tranfered as I use Magic Bullet Grinder to process all of my DSLR clips. It’s really awesome. 64bit and muti-core aware so it’s fast too. It’s around $50 but well worth it. You can do custom file naming, batches, and it’ll even do proxy versions at them same time for you. Resize and all of that is optional as well. Highly recommend it.

February 14, 2013 at 3:07 am in reply to: Any Clean Way of Adjusting White Balance in Post-Production?Drop a 3-way color corrector filter on the clip. Double click and open it the viewer. Click the color corrector 3-way tab. You’ll have your three color wheels. Click on the eye dropper next to the “whites” wheel. Move your mouse over the image in the canvas and use the dropper to click on something that’s definitely white in the scene. That’ll get you close. Often, very close actually.
If you’re colorblind and can’t easily tell, it’s probably a good way to go. Hope that helps!

Here’s what I found on eBay. Make sure you find a factory sealed and never installed copy. And that it’s not an upgrade copy if you don’t already have a serial from a previous version.
If you’re not doing paid work, the educational version is fine and can be found for around $300 if you watch for it.

Aha! Well, that is great news. I had that happen once and it was the overblown issue I’d described.
