Ok. I haven’t used compound clips much yet. Do you open the compound clip to do this?

You might take a look at the LaCie eSATA to thunderbolt hub? The drives listed here are great! And most include eSATA functionality. Very fast. And the GRAIDs scream with it. With the eSATA to thunderbolt hub, you can buy the non thunderbolt drives (sometimes a third of the cost) and use them with thunderbolt! And works great.
I just edited a live performance music video with one HDV cam, two DSLRs, and one GoPro…all on a single 7200rpm eSATA drive…via Multi-Cam in FCP X and had no trouble doing it. No choking at all! On a 2011 MBP.
Of course, this all depends on whether you have a thunderbolt Mac. The Lacie eSATA to TB hub costs $200 but is well worth it since I have years worth of eSATA drives that are relevant again!

October 26, 2012 at 10:30 am in reply to: What is keeping me from exporting an XML? Multi-cam woesI just did a music video (live performance) with a GoPro, two DSLRs (T4i and T2i) and a Sony HDV (tape) camera. The band wanted me to use the studio audio track. They also performed the song twice that night. So that’s 5 angles of cameras…main 1 (HDV first performance), main 2 (HDV second performance), detail 1 (both DSLRS that started and stopped), detail 2 (same as 1, but second time), behind (1 GoPro performance), and the studio audio.
I found it SO much easier and, I dare say fun, doing it in X! Tung is….you have to actually know how to do it right. I used the Ripple Trainng Multi-Cam course for X and it made it completely understandable. A lot of it is about creating keywords (which are just like bins!) and prepping everything. Once you’ve properly done that, and created the multicam clip, you open it up in the able editor and you have everything in its own track, just like a timeline, in a stack and you can re-order them and everything. After you’ve got your clips in order, you open up the multi-cam clip in a project and start cutting in real time while using # keys or your mouse. After that, there’re some very cool, and so easy it’s a crime, tools to fine tune it!
You can sync by time code, audio, markers, and others. No XML export, no extra steps, and it worked awesome. In my case I sync’d up all od the live stuff first (by performance), then the studio audio.
I’m not using X full-time. Still on Legacy for most paying gigs and learning Premiere ans Avid. But I have been doing some gigs on X and the more I use it, the more I really like it. Haven’t tried the update from this week because I was in the edit for the live video.
Try Ripple Training! Huge help and they give you all kinds of stuff you might not’ve figured out on your own.
Hope that helped. Posted from iPad, please excuse typos!

October 23, 2012 at 10:05 am in reply to: final cut pro 7 – bounce in effect for objectsDo you have LiveType? Motion is WAY better for this stuff, and I believe here’s a behavior built in to handle it, but LiveType also does this.

So…is this one that I’d want to keep along with the other one you posted? Or would it replace it? I tried the other one out and it works well. I did seem to notice that, while it does the “zoom in” portion fine, the zoom out part almost seemed like it didn’t work…as if the zoom in happened, then it snapped to the next clip without zooming out. Might’ve been the footage I was working with.
If this is the same but better, I’ll delete the other one and try with this one 🙂

Thanks Loren! That’d be really cool if you could whip one up. I’m learning how to do so myself but, luckily, my biz has been so busy that I haven’t really had time to dig in with Motion and learn how to create them myself.
The one I’m currently using on Legacy FCP is basically zoom into Clip A and Zoom out of Clip B. The version I use now is pretty basic but does have the option to choose the zoom point by putting the crosshairs wherever you want the zoom point to be in the canvas. I’d love to be able to do that in X. I use it quite a bit. The one in the sample I posted on the Cow just now is at a full 1 second but I usually use it at about 15-20 frames. I wanted you to get the full picture of what I’m talking about. Heck, I think the original is one of the 3D simulation plugs that comes standard with FCP legacy. Not sure. I’ve got so many added on now 🙂
Here’s the link to the sample…it’s just two random clips from an edit I’m working on for a charity here on The Outer Banks…here ya go:
