  • Anyone Create A Cross Zoom Transition Yet?

Posted by Tony Brittan on October 17, 2012 at 6:13 pm

I use a cross zoom transition quite a bit in legacy and have started to more projects in X now. Wondering is Simon, Brandon, or any of you others who have been so kind as to create sfx and transitions for X have created one yet and published it? I’d be very grateful for it! Thanks in advance!

You’d have more luck getting an answer on fcp.co in this particular instance.

Do you have an example, or how did you do it in FCP7? I could probably set one up, I’m looking for some more Motion projects right now.

Thanks Loren! That’d be really cool if you could whip one up. I’m learning how to do so myself but, luckily, my biz has been so busy that I haven’t really had time to dig in with Motion and learn how to create them myself.

The one I’m currently using on Legacy FCP is basically zoom into Clip A and Zoom out of Clip B. The version I use now is pretty basic but does have the option to choose the zoom point by putting the crosshairs wherever you want the zoom point to be in the canvas. I’d love to be able to do that in X. I use it quite a bit. The one in the sample I posted on the Cow just now is at a full 1 second but I usually use it at about 15-20 frames. I wanted you to get the full picture of what I’m talking about. Heck, I think the original is one of the 3D simulation plugs that comes standard with FCP legacy. Not sure. I’ve got so many added on now 🙂

Here’s the link to the sample…it’s just two random clips from an edit I’m working on for a charity here on The Outer Banks…here ya go:

This is more challenging for me than I thought. Hopefully this will get it started, maybe someone smarter than me can add to it.

Unzip the archive to your motion templates.

(~/Movies/Motion Templates/Transitions/(make your own folder here or drop it in dissolves)

When you apply the transition, you have to manually keyframe it (Problem 1). I couldn’t get a default zoom to carry over.

So go the beginning of the dissolve, and set Scale Clip A to 100% and keyframe it. Then go the the middle of the dissolve, and drop another keyframe for Scale Clip A and set it to however big you want (600%). Also in the center, set Scale Clip B to whatever Scale Clip A ended up at (600%). Then go to the end of the dissolve and set Scale Clip B to 100%.

Note that if you adjust the timing of the transition, you’ll have to manually move the keyframes along with it (Problem 2).

For now you can’t adjust the Anchor Point (Problem 3). In motion, if I use the anchor point cursor to move the anchor point, everything works as expected, however I can’t publish that to FCPX. If I use the inspector to adjust the anchor point, it moves the whole picture.

If you need to adjust the anchor point, you can right click the transition and edit in Motion. Once in Motion click and hold the cursor and select the anchor point. Move it to where you want it, save, and go back to FCPX. Unfortunately you’d have to do that every time because it’ll save the last anchor point you use.

Let me know if this helps, or what doesn’t work for you and I’ll try to improve it.

    Hi Tony

Here’s a version that might be useful to you in addition to what Loren has done.

    4817_tkycrosszoom.zip

You’ve got an onscreen control for the centre point, plus you can control the zoom factor (the amount of zoom) and the zoom motion blur (not a real motion blur as it’s a bit slow to process and this works fine). And the centre of the zoom blur follows the anchor point which is handy.

I’ve made the zoom Exponential in and Logarithmic out to get what I think is the right degree of “punch” but you might not like that …

Anyway, no keyframing necessary so it should be easy to use.

I don’t this is of interest to anyone but here’s a new improved version of my take on this (better design idea internally that makes for a better overall result):

So…is this one that I’d want to keep along with the other one you posted? Or would it replace it? I tried the other one out and it works well. I did seem to notice that, while it does the “zoom in” portion fine, the zoom out part almost seemed like it didn’t work…as if the zoom in happened, then it snapped to the next clip without zooming out. Might’ve been the footage I was working with.

If this is the same but better, I’ll delete the other one and try with this one 🙂
