From what I recall when I was an online editor I could set via internal dip switches in the bvw series betacam record machines the ability to record zero black.

That was how we recorded logos etc that required super black.

Sorry I don’t remember which board the dip switch is located on.

I would recommend contacting either a rental house engineering department for additional information.

Using an external recorder for field work can be more practical at times than a camcorder especially in multicam work and where a VC and video village are involved. Unless your using fibre having to use a large video and audio harness is something I dread.

FYI Michael Mann is shooting the upcoming Miami Vice with a Viper and SRW-1 portable HDCAM SR decks and fibre.
For the time being the present solution for dual stream recording will be a two piece solution not a camcorder (unless someone wants to use the Venom system from Thomson).

  • Chris,

It a real simple formula when dealing with dv and 4:1:1. GIGO (garbage in garbage out).

One trick you can try to hide the grain is to undersaturate the image by taking down the chroma but you might find you have to suck too much out to hide the grain.

  • Sounds like you tried to save a penny but will end up spending a dollar in your time to fix this.

In the future I recommend digitizing directly to FCP and avoid any transcoding image quality lost as well as pulling your hair out at the last minute.

    Gary,

Actually the F900 does support RP188 embedded timecode via either a CA901 or Evertz (assuming you have the right firmware update).

I use the F900 with a CA901 in combination with a EVertz afterburner to extract timecode for viewing burned in timecode on all my HD shoots.

It took me a while to discover that some Evertz units do not spit out the embedded tc because of older firmware.

The CA-901 was no problem at all.

    Young man,

WhY for the love of the almightly would you deliberately subject an overpriced camcorder such as the F900 to the wear and tear of playing back material that is screaming for a studio vtr.

    1) The F900 does not have an RS-422 port.

    2) I could watch my lemon tree grow a hundred lemons in the time it takes the F900 to rewind or fwd a tape. In fact pouring frozen honey onto my flap jacks in the morning would be quicker and more appealing than having to wait for the F900 to rewind a tape.

    3) The evertz unit does not spit out embedded tC unless the firmware has been updated.

    4) Please let me know the name of the rental house or owner of the F900 so I can tell them to charge you an additional fee for subjecting the heads to unnecessary wear and tear.

5)The F900 weighs alot when you are holding it on your shoulder as you digitize a 50 minute tape.
If you want to get into weight lifting then go get yourself some 50 lbs sandbags and try curling them ten times.

6)Camcorder were never designed for use as a digitizing feeder. So stop while you are ahead and use the right tool for the right application. You started right by getting yourself a Kona 2 now make the next step and run down to rent, borrow, or steal a F500 or J3 playback deck.

    7) Now unless Bob and I are mistaken about your intended use of the F900 and you are actually trying to use the F900 to feed a live HDSDI signal to the Kona 2 for capturing to HD for field work then disregard steps 1-6.

    8) IF step 7 does not apply return to steps 1-6 read them twice, send Bob Z an email that you will do as instructed and then proceed to hooking up your Kona 2 to your HBO cable descrambler box so you can steal cable for free but record it at 4:4:4 for playback to the kids later that night.

Bob I have to put you in charge as I need my ZZzzzzz’s.

Tell the wise ass producers you have to mark up everything because it was shot in 24P and that is very special so you will have to invoice them 2.5x the normal editing rate.

All indie projects must switch over to this format because mini dv will be eliminated in two weeks according to industry sources I overheard at NAB.

Shooting , editing, and duplication must all now conform to the newly established EIG triple D SMPTE Grand Alliance HD standards which mandate that all current, past and future digitally acquired projects must end up on 4:4:4 uncompressed media even if you only want to make a simple DVD dub so Mom and Dad can watch your home movie.

Congress is also involved as they will be switching to an internal 4:4:4 SDI server for all CSPAN broadcasts as of next Monday at Noon.

In addition PrEsIdEnT Bush has authorized all Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine, Coast Guard and even the boy scouts to immediately switch over to using infrared Super Duper 3D HD IMAX 4:4:4 cameras for tracking any mini dv terrorists attempting to enter the country by hanggliding over the mexican border.

Yes indeed 4:4:4 is the way of the future but I still prefer half and half in my coffee.

PS- Disclaimer I have been awake for nearly twenty three hrs due to a major multicam HD shoot I just finished with Barbra Streisand and Barry Gibb and find myself a bit punchy this morning.

Leo brings up a very important point in avoiding breaking the cadence sequence if you intend on removing the 3:2 later.

It will indeed cause issues later which you want to avoid at all costs.

    ps-

    Leo,

I saw some of your restaurant and car spots shot with your varicam at NAB great stuff.

My decision to purchase and work with AJA products was and will always be driven by the overwhelming awesome technical support provided by Rudy and Clark as well as the rest of the staff at AJA.

It is simply amazing the level of personal support and feedback Rudy is able to provide to his clients. Several times I have told John Abt that if only he could develop a human cloning device Rudy would be the first one thru the device.

AJA serves as the ideal model other companies should base customer service on. Companies one hundred time larger cannot even dream of providing the level of support AJA has done for me.

I know I am not alone in this matter as dozens others have stated the same level of customer service for themselves also.

In a nutshell you can’t go wrong with AJA products.
