I just tried capturing for the first time through my new kona2 from a sony f900. The camera has an evertz 2410md to provide the sdi outs. Coming out the sdi it seems that the camera does not output rp-188 timecode. does anyone know this for sure and if this is the case, how do you get timecode from your f900 into the kona2.

    much obliged.

    Young man,

WhY for the love of the almightly would you deliberately subject an overpriced camcorder such as the F900 to the wear and tear of playing back material that is screaming for a studio vtr.

    1) The F900 does not have an RS-422 port.

    2) I could watch my lemon tree grow a hundred lemons in the time it takes the F900 to rewind or fwd a tape. In fact pouring frozen honey onto my flap jacks in the morning would be quicker and more appealing than having to wait for the F900 to rewind a tape.

    3) The evertz unit does not spit out embedded tC unless the firmware has been updated.

    4) Please let me know the name of the rental house or owner of the F900 so I can tell them to charge you an additional fee for subjecting the heads to unnecessary wear and tear.

5)The F900 weighs alot when you are holding it on your shoulder as you digitize a 50 minute tape.
If you want to get into weight lifting then go get yourself some 50 lbs sandbags and try curling them ten times.

6)Camcorder were never designed for use as a digitizing feeder. So stop while you are ahead and use the right tool for the right application. You started right by getting yourself a Kona 2 now make the next step and run down to rent, borrow, or steal a F500 or J3 playback deck.

    7) Now unless Bob and I are mistaken about your intended use of the F900 and you are actually trying to use the F900 to feed a live HDSDI signal to the Kona 2 for capturing to HD for field work then disregard steps 1-6.

    8) IF step 7 does not apply return to steps 1-6 read them twice, send Bob Z an email that you will do as instructed and then proceed to hooking up your Kona 2 to your HBO cable descrambler box so you can steal cable for free but record it at 4:4:4 for playback to the kids later that night.

PS- The status is now that I have two hrs sleep in the last 32 hours and I can’t get to sleep because clients keep calling to try to double and triple book me and to top it all off I have to maintain my presence here on the Cow explaining to everyone the merits of 4:4:4 and HDSDI.

Plz people STop it I need to get my sleep!!!!

Bob I have to put you in charge as I need my ZZzzzzz’s.

Yes, trying to capture a live feed and record to tape at the same time. the tapes will be used for online, just thought there might be a way to do this directly and save the time digitizing after the shoot. So I still wonder whether it is possible to get timecode in to the kona but on second thought the output from the evertz seems a bit dodgy. I guees I’ll just have to do it the good ol fashioned way.

the F900 does not support the RP188 TC spec for off speed flagged frames as the Varicam does.

    Gary,

Actually the F900 does support RP188 embedded timecode via either a CA901 or Evertz (assuming you have the right firmware update).

I use the F900 with a CA901 in combination with a EVertz afterburner to extract timecode for viewing burned in timecode on all my HD shoots.

It took me a while to discover that some Evertz units do not spit out the embedded tc because of older firmware.

The CA-901 was no problem at all.

you are correct , I mis-spoke, What I thought I I was trying to say is that the F900 does not support all of the VFR data embedding in the same way the varicam does. Some early models of the f900 do not support the RP188 TC stream without having the hardware / firmware updated.

FYI for the others out there
the original RP188 TC spec was intended to include a variety of USER bit info, not just date and time, but also frame rate , keycode, shot or take #, user info, and even GPS data embedding are supported. Most current workflows (outside of NASA) only use this info for Frame Rate information and data at this time, but as we move to a tapeless working mode, more of this data is to be embedded in our files just like it is in the EXIF metadata format used on digital still cameras
