For those on a budget the Sony pvm monitor line (PVM-14L5/1 & 20L5/1) exist which allows a good monitor suitable for field and post work but without the sticker shock of the higher end bvm line.
I have both the 14″ and 20″ which I use for field and post work and along with a Sencore monitor probe am quite happy with the units.

First mistake offering to work for free only results in slave work. Offering to work for experience is a turn off to employers who desire qualified experienced applicants not those looking to start out and then take off after a short stay.
Just take a look at the no pay jobs offered on Mandy’s and Craig’s list.
Most ad’s sponsered by producer’s on the lookout for newbies such as yourself who will take a bite for free.In the long run you are wasting your time working for free as a slave with little hope of expanding your horizons.
Best bet is to try to get paid work in a related department to the one you are interested in.
For example instead of trying to get the assistant editor position consider applying for the tape operator or quality control operator and working your way up to the editorial department. A paid internship might be another option if you can find the right facility to connect up with.
You have to gain some networking contacts first and foremost before you can “fly” into your ideal dream job.
FYI mailing random resumes out to employers generally results in the resume being filed in the waste paper basket.
A direct contact via a face to face meeting or short discusiion is key for anyone to remember who you are and what you have to offer.Finding a job is no different than finding a long term girlfriend or wife…. you have to shop around for a long time and be willing to make the relationship work for both of you.
Some other websites to look at for job listings are all the major networks as well as NABET which all have job listings for freelancers as well as full or part time employees.

Do not get a black color floor.
In the event the tiles are glossy or contain reflective coating you will have to deal with lighting reflections.
White is more ideal and can provide bounce fill in lighting as well to increase the overall base lighting level.

You are spinning your wheels trying to find a cheap solution to an expensive problem.
High end LCD which are considered equal to color grading CRT monitors are well into the 20-30K price range.
Such units incorporate look up tables. Ecinema or Cinetal are few companies that come to mind.
If budget is a concern you can do well with a AJA IO or other AJA video card to output your video signal to a PVM-14L5/1 or 20L5/1 multiformat monitor(s).
Along with a monitor probe which allows calibrating the gain and bias you will be able to set up the monitor accurately to do color correction work.
Calibrating the monitor to color bars via blue check is worthless if the gain and bias are incorrectly set up.
No one who is working in a critical color correction environment uses FCP viewer or canvas to make CC decisions so just give this thought up as it is incorrect for the intended application.
Regardless of what is possible in photoshop or any other application FCP can’t do this and I do not foresee Steve Jobs making your request an absolute requirement for FCP 6.0.

Did you ever consider looking at the manuals for the monitor or other gear? In most cases there are wiring flow charts included which detail examples.
You keep repeating that nothing has changed but the results you receive are incorrect. Stop denying that “nothing has changed” and assume that indeed something you are not aware of has been altered and you need to track down where the “break in the chain is.”
Learning how to troubleshoot requires taking a critical look at diagnosing each individual piece of equipment to discover where the “break in the chain” is. Checking the input switches on the monitor would have been the first place to start. Followed by the cables routing from the vtr to the monitor as well as switches on the vtr.
FYI some monitors are dual format input (ie RGB and YRB component) dependent on where the switch is set to. It is vital to confirm that the setting are correct for the signal you are feeding the monitor or vtr.

You hit it right on the nail Bob.
A common end user issue problem I have encountered in the past centers around the statement “but it worked last time”.
Well last time is not this time unless you have a portable time machine to live in the past.
We can only deal with the present time in which case somewhere in the workflow the system is incorrectly wired.
The solution is quite simple:
1) stop wasting your time trying to “Do it yourself engineering” and immediately hire a qualified video engineer or NLE system installer to troubleshoot and rewire your edit suite if necessary.
Hiring a experienced video engineer is money well spent in times where more wasted productivity is lost due to what could turn out to be a simple solution.

Your boss is an inconsiderate SOB who only respects you for your free slave labor.
If you ask to be compensated for your time because your skill set are essential for him to complete a project then he should have no problem hiring you. However on the other hand if he can find another slave to work for free then to heck with him.
It’s time to move on to a real job where you can nuture a positive beneficial working relationship with an employer who respects you for what you have to offer.
It’s a two way street but in your case you keep getting run over time and time again.
Quite honestly it’s worthless to stay around and become someone else’s slave.
ROI- return on investment – what did you acheive by working as an intern? Did you network with other potential freelancers or clients that will hire you or at best recommend you for real work?

Did you ever shoot at off speeds such as 60 fps.
The beauty of the varicam is the ability to under and overcrank shots.
If you did shoot offspeed ask post if they used the FRC either in FCP or external unit to deal with offspeed footage.
