Telecast does make a triax to fibre adapter. Sorry I don’t know the model number but it is intended for applications where you need to combine triax and fiber systems together.

One critical item which always gets checked out when I prep a varicam is verifying where the vtr hz setting is currently at.
Any experienced and qualified DIT or video engineer will double and even triple check this each and every time when shooting with the Varicam.
You can’t even trust the rental facility all the time to QC the vtr hz setting as an incorrect setting can even slip by them sometimes.
In the end assume nothing is set right and find the faults before the shoot occurs.
In my opinion the success of a shoot is dependent on a proper prep in advance.

You are forgiven as for short test the use of a camcorder is deemed ok.
For long term you already know it is not recommended not only for the wear and tear put on the camcorder transport but because the additional time to search around for clips would drive you insane without the ability to log and capture by timecode.

If you show is due for release in the world of NTSC composite television for broadcast or distribution you need to be concerned with possible issues due to moire.
In the field while shooting with the Varicam you may not see when viewing the serial digital HDSDI signal but an experienced VC or DIT will warn you if they foresee any possible issues downstream outside of the HD release.
FYI on a DV camera you are generally watching an NTSC composite feed which will display the moire problem but with the Varicam the serial digital HDSDI output from the camera not show the moire problem as it is a analog composite artifact not digital issue.
Your options are to look at a NTSC downconverted image from a high quality downconverter on set to verify if any moire issues might exist.

You missed the part where Athen explained he is using the camera (varicam) as the playback device for capturing.
Why anyone would want to abuse the transport in the camera (for long term capturing) thereby subjecting the transport additional wear and tear is beyond me? But the real issue lies in the fact that although the timecode is embedded in the HDSDI signal FCP still requires RS 422 control to capture the timecode off tape. One major reason why a studio vtr is required for long term capturing.
I believe there is a third party workaround which could extract the embedded tc and turn it around to feed the RS-422 port but I don’t recall the manufacturer but I do recall it was an expensive solution.
