1. HDV long GOP is handled natively. There is no loss. There is no audio handling for muxed MPEG formats.

The educational discount was not 100-200, it was half the price of the retail software for institutions, 100 more than that for individuals. It’s ridiculously cheap. I don’t think any other company offers education prices that are so deeply discounted. That’s why they’re not offering upgrades. Their educational discount is comparable to the retail upgrade price. If you need a full retail copy because you are no longer eligible for an educational discount then the only option is to pay full retail and qualify for upgrade pricing on future versions.

That’s the educational institution price for Studio. It’s a not an upgrade price.

No and no, Did anybody mention the loss of Soundtrack from the FCP bundle? Trading Soundtrack for multicam. Not sure if that’s a good deal for many users.

Put an empty layer in the PSD file underneath the layer with the effect and use Cmd-E to Merge Down.

When you drag the clip into the timeline watch which way the arrow points. If it’s a downward pointing arrow it will overwrite into the timeline, if it’s a right pointing arrow it will insert. If you drag the clip to the top third of the track you’ll get a right pointing arrow and an insert edit, if you drag it into the lower two-thirds you’ll get the downward arrow and will do an overwrite.

There’s a presumption. Perhaps Apple can’t make it work in real-time, or can’t make real-time video display, or perhaps they can’t handle the timecode properly, and will decide to throw its hat in with Panasonic and Sony true HD formats and leave HDV for third party and consumer products. Panasonic is not in the HDV consortium, and is heavily touting its DVCPRO HD format in a small format camera as the best course for professionals on a tight budget.

Final Cut Pro HD 4.5 does NOT support HDV material. It is MPEG-2 and FCP does NOT support the MPEG-2 format within the application. FCP HD will never work with HDV material without support from third parties.
