I’m afraid not. It seems the only way to get the retail version now is to purchase the full product or to upgrade an existing retail version. The academic price for Studio though is very good.

That shouldn’t be an issue. Even in DV you can capture video or audio separately as QT is stripping out the video and audio into separate tracks anyway.

You could do all that, but about 4/5 of it is unnecessary. Simply copying a sequence into a new project, will break it’s links to the material in the original. Changing the sequence presets and deleting the existing sequence in the new project will do nothing at all. If you’re doing a single sequence that’s all you need.
There are many problems with MM, but your workflow doesn’t address any of them, i.e. speed changes, time remapping, freeze frames, nests, etc. Work was done on FCP5 to improve speed changes and MM, though how well that really works, especially on time remapped clips remains to be seen.

My understanding was that from monitor output you had to have a card. The GOP structure isn’t correct in the edited sequence until it’s conformed, and the camera doesn’t recognize so you can’t pass through it. That’s what I was told by a number of people.

They do have to be the current versions, no FCP2, Motion, and DSP2. You need FCP4.5, Motion and DSP3.

Going to Soundtrack and going to Motion work slightly differently but basically, yes both those functions work in FCP4.5. To Soundtrack you export a sequence or a range in a sequence, to Motion you export selected clips from the timeline. FCP’s fine with 10.3.9.

Can’t say I agree with much of this. The JVC camera is much better designed, has controls in all the places a professional full body camera, with a real lens on the front with proper focus and exposure controls and a broadcast rocker switcher. What Panny was showing was a blown-up DVX100, with all the poor controls, no real manual exposure and a horribly embedded TC preset deep in the menus. I thought the picture quality looked excellent, and I especially like that it shoots 720p60, which in my view is an excellent format. JVC uses a short GOP with motion interpolation, and I thought the playback on moving images and camera motion was very good. Not to mention you don’t need $2k to record eight minutes of video.
