Recomendations for upgrading from fcp4.5 to 5 even if you have the Production Suite
Posted by Todd George on April 26, 2005 at 4:58 pmHello All
running Apple Production Suite Academic on both my single processor G5 and my powerbook G4
wondering what will be the best path to take for installing the new suite as there is no upgrade option (that I can see) from one suite to the next production bundle
is there a way to move the academic license up to pro (even though I work for a university) to make this process easier or am I looking at a clean install once the new suite arrives
thanks
Todd George

April 26, 2005 at 5:12 pmI’m afraid not. It seems the only way to get the retail version now is to purchase the full product or to upgrade an existing retail version. The academic price for Studio though is very good.
All the best,
Tom

April 26, 2005 at 5:14 pmIf you are running all of the latest software (DVD SP 3, FCP HD, and Motion 1) you can buy the upgrade for $499 which will upgrade all of the apps…

April 26, 2005 at 5:25 pm699… it states in the upgrade path that any version of FCP can be upgraded to the suite for 699… this would be a retail license too…

April 26, 2005 at 5:32 pmDoes this mean that if I bought these applications seperately, I can upgrade them by buying the Production Suite upgrade???

April 26, 2005 at 7:05 pmYes as long as they are the latest versions of the software and are not academic, you only need to spend $499 for the upgrade to the new “Studio” suite. From then on I’ll be the upgrade path will be the least expensive. i.e. each year or so, you’ll upgrade all apps with one upgrade pkg…

April 27, 2005 at 2:26 pmHello,
Some people are saying there is no upgrade from academic version. This is not true. While there is no academic upgrade…meaning – no discount price to the retail upgrade price. However, you can upgrade using the same retail upgrade price.
I have the academic version of FCP 4. I am upgrading to the “Full Retail” FC Studio for the upgrade price of $699. This is the same upgrade price as those upgrading from the retail FCP 1,2,3, or 4 to FC Studio. I do not know if this will apply to your upgrade from academic bundle to new FC Studio for $499. But if not, just upgrade to the retail (Full version) of FC Studio for $699 – that is still a great deal!
And you can get it for less than $699, as I did, call Robert at 1 800 409 5381 ext 2488 and ask for the Ken Stone discount! (visit kenstone.net – https://www.kenstone.net/cgi/discussions/general.cgi?read=49240#49240 )

April 29, 2005 at 12:15 pmHello Tom,
I hope so too. However, I called Apple and confirmed that everything is OK and they are definitely aware that I’m upgrading from an academic version to the Full Retail FC Studio.

I also have FCP 4 Academic and would like to know if your Full Retail FC Studio install, goes successfully. Please report back or email me at Newsshooter [at} Hotmail dot com.
Thanks,
