The speed change thing is a problem for many people. Your solution is one. Another is to going to the beginning of the clip in the timeline and then use Cmd-Shift-F to match back to a new copy of the media from the hard drive. Mark your In point, do your sped change and then edit the shot back into the timeline however you like.

That’s what the patch panel at the head of the timeline tracks is for. Here you can switch on and off the tracks you want and reassign video and audio to whatever destination you want.

Make a new project.

Drag the Favorites folder into the new project.

Save the project and move it to the new machine. You can then move the contents from the project bin into the the Favorites folder of the other computer.

In recent years, the past four anyway, they have shown Final Cut Express, but not FCP. Express is run by pro apps, but it’s aimed at the consumer market.

If this is FCE3 you need to get the update to 3.0.1. This is specifically for PCIe iMacs and G5s.

Most professional decks do not preread the timecode as David described. Regen TC means that the deck will continue writing timecode based on the last number it wrote. So if you stop recording at 1:00:20:10, and then rewind to the one hour mark the next number the deck will write will be 1:00:20:11 regardless of where it is on the tape. Using David’s method, on professional decks (especially on Sony pro decks) you set the TC to 58:30:00:00 and write past the one hour mark. You then set your assemble point at one hour, and you reset the deck to generate TC beginning at 1:00:00:00.
