Nice work Todd – adapt and overcome, SAS style! You might want to place that image as a proud member of the shittyrigs website (not that it is that shitty!). I love looking through those pictures to see what people have had to cook up when something has been forgotten, lost or damaged on a job!
Makes a valid point to never ship anything in the hold of a plane – makes me shudder to think of the things I’ve flown around Europe with whilst sat with little more than a laptop and some lenses in the overhead bins.
We recently purchased some kit from Adorama and direct from Kessler in the US to help build a new motion control rig we have invested in. The portable rails and stands weren’t available in the UK and I was expecting a big shipping invoice as they weighed nearly 22Kg for each parcel. Was amazed that we were only charged $138 for each – considering how much it costs for additional bags to go on a plane as baggage allowance its a no brainer I guess!

it pretty clearly shows and corroborates a speed bump when working with mixed format high resolution media both in adobe and fcpx exports, aside from when the dual gpu of the 2013 Mac Pro boosts export performance from mixed media timeline to prores master.

Fine, those two points completely change my opinion and now fcpx has incredible keyframing abilities. It’s totally defensible that I can see key frames appear in random parts of the timeline despite the playhead indicating where they should appear.

I thought in Sound City, that basically everyone came out of it with barely any money. The guy who owned the studio made next to nothing after rick springfield dropped him like a stone and all of his studio operators got to work on cool albums for a salary. The woman who ran the studio for years didn’t get a pension or a payout after the studio closed and the guy who swept up and cleaned toilets was the one in tears at the end because she, and he, had been treated so shabbily by a studio that had recorded some of the greatest albums in rock history? Yes analogue was beautiful, but it looked like that studio should have still been open if it had made some good decisions in the 90s.
The rags to riches story I do remember from a documentary is the Netflix made “Defiant Ones” about Dre and Jimmy Iovine, but they made money from owning labels and headphone companies, not from the lunch bringing/bog cleaning/sweeping up career path.

It is rubbish.
Still buggy – position your playhead over a clip and then add a keyframe using the effects window and sometimes it just jumps into a totally different position on the timeline – usually out by a couple of frames, meaning you need to manually adjust it.
In Ae or Pr, if you have some keyframes on a specific track (easy now, I know these are roles or whatever the shit we are supposed to call them), you can just elastic band them all and move them down the timeline. You can also grab a few and hit delete to remove them. In FCPX you need to manually click on each individual one and move it with a shift click, or right click and delete. Far too convoluted.
It would be incredibly cool if FCPX looked in a similar direction to Resolve and put a Motion tab inside FCPX, along with a Logic tab for audio finishing…..one more expensive license, a limited one just for FCPX, or adoption for each user that has bought all programs. Just imagine – instead of clicking on the titles tab, you click on a tab that opens Motion inside FCPX. Custom transitions, titles, animations, key framing, compositing and more, available inside your FCPX workflow. Another one lets you work just on the audio in a Logic X workspace. They could even implement a robust apple-ised version of pixelmator for adjusting still frames too. Barely any rendering between the 3 programs. No xml exports. Just simple to use Pro tabs that allow for finishing more complex projects. The only reason to ever export an EDL or XML would be to work between Resolve and/or Fusion for more complex work…..
So cool, so effortless, solves the keyframing issues for 95% of what is required, and ties 3 great pieces of software inside one app…. Just saying.

A late weigh-in but another plus 1 for black magic ultrastudio 4K systems. One of the cards they make is even future proofed for 8K work too. Resolve works perfectly with them, but if you do plan on getting into resolve, Aja cards don’t play so nice with it…
The only thing to be careful with is to use the blackmagic output to route your audio as you can run into latency issues when your audio is either run from computer output or a separate usb audio card.
Most of the blackmagic units connect via thunderbolt 2 or 3, or you can get an internal PCIE card – it’s whatever floats your boat and sits best with your editing needs.
It’s also worth looking at some nice jellyfish or qNap raids for your suites which I’m sure Mr Zelin would be able to help with.

Think of it in terms of frames, not seconds.
Each frame could take you hours to animate properly.
