Check out the odyssey 7Q Todd. It is a fantastic bit of kit that primarily acts as a prores recorder at up to 4K via hdsdi. However it also can record 4 1080p streams at once, as well as a 5th stream which is your live output. The interface allows you to use touchscreen controls to switch inputs and this mix can be recorded to the internal ssd. Obviously requires 4 good cameras but if it’s a basic gig you could get away with 3 static locked off shots and another that is manned.

Red has minijack inputs on their basic I/o module but the “pro” I/o has xlr connectors.

Can’t agree with you here Bill.
Every shoot I go on I need a laptop with me. For notes, scripts, prep, uploading files, confirming CGI plates or just basic DIT. The MacBook Pro is apples version of a portable pro computer. I, and everyone I know that shoots pro video typically needs usb 3, thunderbolt 2, headphone out/in, 10Ge and sd/flash card readers on a weekly basis.
Thunderbolt 3 might be a forwards step for speed but I don’t like buying a laptop for £3000 and needing to spend at least another £250 on peripherals that aren’t even made by Apple to enable this connectivity. It’s a great laptop, it’s just a forced eco system. Which piece of kit do you buy that is released every 2 years that needs 10% of its value spending on third party connectors just to keep working in the same way?
Red cameras always require additional investment to get more from the body you bought, but if they brought out a new camera that had only one port for connection to video out/sync/evf/hdmi/timecode/power, and the only adaptor was made by wooden camera and cost £3000, you’d think twice about the purchase, no?

Ha, good pic – I really can see applications for it with what we do. Previews and exports of red footage on set, working in high resolution on the road – it will make a difference

I can’t get away from the thought that if its about light and quick and easy, on a limited budget, and the delivery is for web, wouldn’t you use a blackmagic pocket camera and have 1080p ProRes at 10bit quality?

I’m sure it is faster when you compare internals, but there is not going to be any comparison when you can leverage a 1080ti, or even 2 of them for assisting with grading, playback and export. The performance spikes for playing back 4K footage with a grade goes from 3fps to 30fps – pretty incredible on a basic MacBook Pro.
Heck, I even attended a presentation of fcpx 10.4 in London where we were told that VR performance is supported on MacBook Pro as long as you have an eGPU…
As soon as eGPU’s are supported in FCPX, I’ll be buying a couple of the new MacBook Pro’s – that’s how much difference I think it will make to remote editing and export.

I think the analogy works ok. But sketches that Picasso did on a napkin with a pencil are worth less than his canvas works. They are still art, just not…as fulfilling.
