First guess would be your drives. Sounds like it (they) might not be fast enough to play back your file. What format is your project?

If you are shooting Mini DV to tape, try picking up a deck for capturing the tapes. You will only need one deck and it will have a functioning Firewire port. New ones are not too expensive and used ones are all over the place. You will also have deck control and matching time code on the captured files. Even a used Mini DV camera with a FW port would likely be less than composite adapters and the video will look better as well. The Canopus will work well. Use the S-Video input of the cameras have S-Video out.

Thanks Shane. I’m trying to help out some News guys that are changing over to P2 cameras but still have to use their older Avid Newscutters for a while yet. Just trying to find a way that they can get footage into the Avids without doing it in real time.

Select your audio track. Under the Modify menu, deselect the Stereo Pair option. Now, select the track you want to delete and do so. You may also need to deselect Link or at lock the video track so it won’t be deleted as well as the audio track. Select the track you want to duplicate and drag it down (or up) to the empty audio track under(above) the original while holding the Shift & Option keys. This should make a copy of your track directly under(over) the original track and in sync with it. Now, select both audio tracks again and re-enable the Stereo Pair option. Pan the tracks to center if they aren’t already there.

Do you have the computer’s power save feature set to allow your drives to spin down after a certain amount of time? Disable that “feature” if it is on. I used to have a few Lacie drives that would spin down and go to sleep. I always got the beachball during the time that they were spinning back up.
