It’s also possible, depending on your sequence settings, to have TOO MUCH resolution on your stills. If the stills are very high resolution, try reducing them down in PhotoShop to a size more in line with your sequence settings. If you don’t need to do moves on the stills, make them the closest size to your project settings. If they look all “crawly”, you can try adding a very slight blur to the stills to take the edge off of them.

Streamclip does indeed export ProRes Quicktime files. It will actually export any file format that is loaded on your machine. You just have to know how to find the proper settings. Look under the Export to Quicktime tab in the File pulldown menu.ProRes will be in there along with many other choices.
Give yourself some time to get used to the software. It’s not all that difficult once you understand how non linear video editing works. Avid will not be any easier for you. Both programs have a steep learning curve, but both make sense to editors who are familiar with the professional editing process. You are at the point where, in many cases, you simply don’t know what you don’t know. Nothing wrong with that at all. That’s how you learn. There are a lot of aspects to editing and a lot of background material that needs to be understood before you are going to be comfortable with the process of editing. Read and ask questions. One question and answer will sometimes save you hours of trial and error experimenting. The COW is a good resource. Ask away!
Final Cut does work and it works very well. There are many of us that make a living with it. Once you get used to it, it’s not all that difficult. It just takes time.

What file format are the video clips you are editing?

My guess would be a white hard cyc and lit and exposed to blow out the whites a bit. If it’s green screen, it’s an incredibly good one especially if you watch the video for the black mesh chair. The fine mesh in the back of the chair would be a nightmare to get a good key on a green screen. Not to mention all of the chrome on the base of the chair which would be reflecting green/blue backing and would be very difficult to clean up.

On your Snow Leopard install discs there is a copy of the “old Quicktime 7.x. I’ve found Quicktime X to be rather useless, professionally. Put the install disc in and do a custom install, find Quicktime 7 and install that. It should restore a lot of codecs and functionality that seem to have gone missing in Quicktime X.
Another example of “dumbing down” for the masses from Apple.
