  • Can P2 files be used in an Avid Meridien system?

Band-Aid patch time here. Is there a way to import P2 files (HPX-370 camera) so that they can be converted and used on an older Avid News Cutter Meridien-based system? I believe there used to be a Raylight product that could convert the MXF files to OMF AVI’s but I don’t think that it’s available anymore. Not too many older Avids like this in use anymore. I need only SD resolution for this.
Can anyone help out with a workflow on how this could be done?

Gotta import them into a current Avid system, then transcode to 2:1 or 1:1.

There is no way you are going to get Meridian systems to recognize the P2 format directly.

Thanks Shane. I’m trying to help out some News guys that are changing over to P2 cameras but still have to use their older Avid Newscutters for a while yet. Just trying to find a way that they can get footage into the Avids without doing it in real time.

Thinking totally outside the box… This is for a Mac. How about you have Calibrated’s MXF Import. Also, install Avid codecs (available somewhere online – I lost the link) Open MXF file in QuickTime. Then Export Movie to Quicktime and in Options select Avid Meridien. It’s a bunch of steps but might be automated using Automator.

It could work but they have about a half dozen Avid work stations that would need access to the same Mac for ingestion. There would be a bottle neck for editing leading up to air time. Also, some of these news people just barely understand the process for editing on the NewsCutter system. This would add an additional layer of complexity to the process. Looks like they will just have to motor through the transition as best they can for a few months.
