I deliver many TV spots in my market and the surrounding area. Here, at least, (N.E. Wisconsin) the accepted format for delivery is Beta SP. No one accepts Digibeta at all. Everyone accepts BetaSP. These are local and regional spots, mind you. National stuff and programs all go out on Digibeta.
We have seven TV stations and several cable companies here and all would prefer different formats for their dubs. Several stations use Beta SX, one is almost exclusivly DVCPro, the rest are a mix of BetaSP, 1-Inch, D-2 and whatever isn’t completly obsolete. Hell, until just recently, we were still delivering some dubs on 3/4-inch up to northern Michigan!? (Eewww!)
It’s a regular Tower of Babal here. The only universally accepted format in the market is still BetaSP. I don’t see it changing in the next year or so either. The local Time Warner people have a regional FTP site where I can electronically transfer spot files for cable insertion. It’s a start.
Perhaps we’re a bit behind the curve up here, but as of today, Beta SP rules for distribution. Tomorrow, who knows.
If the original poster is doing local spots for local TV stations, I’m guessing that BetaSP would be perfectly fine for their dubs. I’m guessing that this is still the case in many markets.

I experienced this last night with a pair of striped FW800 drives. This could be a problem…it takes quite a long time.
Anyway to disable Spotlight without limiting accessability to the drives or disabling the “old fashioned” CMD-“F” find function? While it’s a neat feature, I just don’t need it right now.
Waiting for FCP5 to show up soon. Installing it on a brand new G5 with Tiger. I will, however, be keeping my old G4 system online… just in case.

I’m guessing that what you are seeing on your NTSC monitor is the flicker between fields, especially on a motion clip. You are seeing both field one and field two at more or less the same time. Since, on a clip with a lot of motion, you subject had actually moved slightly in the frame from the time the camera scanned field one to the time it scanned field two, and both fields are being displayed, the “freeze frame” will jitter when it is paused. In the FCP canvas, you aren’t seeing both fields on the computer screen, so you don’t notice it. On your TV monitor, both fields are being displayed, so it’s very noticable. Other than deinterlacing (and loosing resolution) that’s pretty much the way it works in “regular” video. This is probably a function of the ADVC box and I don’t think there is a way to tell the system to display only field one or field two. I could be wrong, but just about all of the I/O boxes will show both fields at the same time.
Make sense? And if this isn’t what you’re having trouble with, well…as Gilda used to say on Saturday Night Live…”Never mind!”

If you don’t have ANY clips selected (or transitions) and you use the zoom command (I use CMD+ or CMD-) it will center the playhead to the middle of the sequence window and zoom in/out from there. You should be able to zoom straight into a clip as far as the system will go and then come back out again while the playhead stays centered in the sequence window.

Can you provide a bit more information on your set up, how you are capturing and so on. As for the timecode issue, I’m not sure how you can have a Digibeta tape without time code? If it’s a field original, the camera added the code. If it’s a dub, it should still have code. Unless the code is jumping (time of day?) it should work.
How are you getting the Digibeta into your system? At what compression? What kind of drives? More information, please!

The footage was shot by the client on a Panasonic DVX100, but I transfered it into FCP on a Sony camera, specifically a TRV-900. (don’t do much DV work…sorry no dedicated deck)
Anyhow, it’s possible that the timecode was actually 12 hours. The client didn’t know how to set the code. It’s a rental camera and had different setups each time he rented it. Half of the project is 4×3, half is 16×9 letterboxed. Each day of shooting looks different. A bit of a mess, but he doesn’t care so what the heck…

Are you capturing from a deck with RS-422 control or thru a deck with Firewire control but feeding the video into the Io? If you are using Firewire, make sure that you are using a different Firewire bus that what the Aja is using. Another device (deck) on the same bus as the Io will cause problems while capturing.
