May 13, 2005 at 2:44 pmIf the playhead plays off the end of the sequence you have to scroll to follow it. When you stop playing, the sequence will snap to the playhead. Ctrl + or – or Command + or – zoom in and out.

May 13, 2005 at 2:53 pmah yes.. zoom to playhead!
a long cherished dream of all fcp editors!
but in reality, you dont zoom to playhead, you can only zoom to selection.
one of the many comands in FCP where selection takes precedent.
but once youve zoomed into a selected clip, and you want to egt to hte playhead, it’s really simple:
you just nuge the playghead forward one frame, and FCP wakes up to itself, and takes you to it.
i use the left /right arrows to nudge/move a frame at a time.
if the frame you plarked on was crucial, then go left arrow, right arrow, to jog FCP into place, and to wind up back on the frame.oh, yes, you should de-select, too, before you go to far.
That;s Shift Apple A ( the opposite of apple A for select all)
(i re-map to Apple D for De-select)i do this so often, ive kind of forgotten about wanting “zoom to playhead”
cheers,

May 13, 2005 at 4:57 pmIf you don’t have ANY clips selected (or transitions) and you use the zoom command (I use CMD+ or CMD-) it will center the playhead to the middle of the sequence window and zoom in/out from there. You should be able to zoom straight into a clip as far as the system will go and then come back out again while the playhead stays centered in the sequence window.

May 13, 2005 at 8:28 pmand just for the record, using the zoom slider in the Timeline window will always zoom into the playhead position even when clips or transitions are selected.

December 8, 2011 at 12:40 amAMEN! I’m struggling to find capability in FCP X. Honestly, if they made this one simple function work, I think a lot of people wouldn’t dismiss the program so much. It’s almost IMPOSSIBLE to navigate the timeline in FCP X. Zooming is like being in a circus. One minute you’re on your clip, the next you’re at the end of your timeline. It’s ridiculous and they need to change it.
