Fantastic info Eric. Many thanks. Haven’t seen such a boiled down explanation anywhere!

Thanks Eric! Is there any documentation/benchmarks out there that explain a bit more about how Premiere/AE/Encoder use cores/threads and GPUs? Really trying to get a grasp on this!

In our current setups, the only things that seem to have made a big difference in anything have been the graphics cards.

But if CC is really using the threads, then I’d definitely want to shell out the cash for more of them!

The other big question is AE’s use of multiple cores in normal processing vs. using multiprocessing during renders. I haven’t been able to find good info on this!

Recently tested Premiere on the latest iMacs with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5, and hardware acceleration was unavailable… Would love to see them officially activate this without need for hacks! 🙂

I hear that the new Mac Pro is fully supported, with Mercury hardware acceleration running nicely on the firepros. I’m wondering now about how soon hardware acceleration will work on the new iMacs. Could be a great solution for a lot of people (like me) if the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB GDDR5 was fully Mercury supported. As of a few weeks ago (tested at the apple store) it was NOT…

I hear ya and it sounds like they are doing a great job these days. The proof is in the pudding and people seem to be loving X and my studio’s all-CC workflow will run on a bunch of new Mac Pros.

But the disenchantment with Apple really was more than just a bad X launch. From my point of view, it was years of not paying attention… not updating Mac Pros in any serious way, not significantly updating Final Cut Studio for a long time… tantalizing us with Color and then dumping it… and then in the end… SURPRISE… dumping FCP7 for X. Maybe that wasn’t all a mistake on Apple’s part from a business point of view. But for me and a lot of people I work with, they lost my confidence as a professional and I left before they could win it back.

But again, I love what they’re doing now. Anything that helps people produce better art faster and more economically has my vote.

Interesting discussions! I learned to edit tape-to-tape. First NLE was Premiere 4. Became a professional Avid editor. Loved it. Switched to FCP editing TV and movies because of price. Now my studio switched from FCP7 to Premiere after not being thrilled with FCPX. Full circle back to Adobe. Love what Adobe is doing–aggressively listening and improving things. My big beef with Apple was that they took a big turn NOT listening for long while. But if they’re back… it will be great to have multiple tools competing to be the best.

    Good answer from Adobe:

    From https://blogs.adobe.com/premierepro/2013/06/adobe-premiere-pro-cc-and-gpu-su...

Also, some customers may be aware that in the past there was a not-so-secret way of enabling non-supported GPUs by the ‘hacking’ or removal of a text file. This is no longer necessary in Premiere Pro CC. As long as you have a reasonably modern card with at least 1GB of VRAM, you will still be able to enable that card in the Project Settings dialog. A warning message will appear letting you know that your card has not been certified by Adobe, but once that dialog is clicked through you can use your GPU. The team does try to certify as many GPUs as possible, but we can’t test everything, so this is a way to let you decide if you’re happy using an untested configuration.

    ——————-

The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB may not be officially supported (tested by Adobe) it will still allow you to enable GPU acceleration.

Where is this “approved cards” list? Can’t seem to find it… Hoping that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4GB in new imacs will be supported soon…
