They make custom PC systems for professional video and audio use. They are also regular participants in the forum at Adobe. You may want to call them to see what other options you might consider in the future. I did and they were very helpful.

I can understand how you feel, Apple is pretty much EOL with me and you are right, the contemporary Mac Pros seem to be generating lots of performance complaints. There are many folks at the Adobe Premiere Pro 5.5 forum that have been using PCs for years. You might find their guidance helpful.

Thanks Alex. I tend to see things from the perspective of my experience which was a large post house for 18 years and a boutique for 10. I can see in a situation (like news) where a lot of sharing is going on this could be a big issue. Its a shame to lose the immediacy of use which is Premieres strongest selling points at this time.

Jeff, I think the folks at Cineform are trying to become that solution. Its now free to everybody (422 version) if you download the GoPro Studio software. Its 64 bit and works on all platforms an is poised to play a bigger role in professional video

Alex can you define what you mean by this statement? I would guess you dont mean going back to the way things work in FCP where all clips need to be transcoded to Prores . The element of time that is saved by the way things are currently done is monumental. Even thought its slower in the Export process since the entire timeline needs to be interpreted and rendered, unlike FCPs approach of using render files “stitched together” to create the exported file.

A universal codec is what we need in the video industry. Unfortunately at the current moment Prores encoding is not available to PC users. So that lets that one out of the running.

And I haven’t heard a lot about people mastering to DNxHD, more about people transcoding to it on the Avid platform.

And after todays experience Im not to sure about Cineform.

So that leaves us with…

You know, I thought so to. Until I downloaded it and tried to convert something in AME…it crashed. Tried the same thing with Prores 422…it was fine. Then I tried to output something from AE…Cinform crashed. Tried the same thing with Prores 422…it was fine. Im not to impressed with Go Pro Studio codecs at this point to tell you the truth Kevin. I tried all these tests both booting my system in 32 then 64 bit (Snow Leopard). At this point Im sticking with Prores..it works! 😀
