ProRes 422 (not HQ or LT) is your best option really.

    Or keep the original RAWs?

    Hi Geo

I can’t speak for editing Avid as we use FCP7… editing h.264 is not an option. As far as I know, if you transcode from say, ProRes to h.264 you won’t save any significant space unless you lower the data rate – which would mean you lose quality. The more you compress the smaller your file.

We store our media uncompressed on LTO drives if we don’t intend on using the media very often. Backup/long life speaking.

    Cheers
    Tom

    Thanks guys

The loggers are not really my domain, I am just dealing with the technical side of things. I have no idea how much detail or what they are expected to log etc.

I’ll check out PresSTORE – although I don’t understand how it is different to Bru PE/Server?

    Thanks
    Tom

    Ah.

That’ll be an issue then, as I pulled the files from the SD card to my HD then transcoded with compressor.

Thank you everyone for your input, everyone.

    The general feeling seems to be;

FCX – not worth learning beyond basic functionality.

Avid Media Comp – not the simplest of the bunch, but widely used.

Adobe Prem – Great, but not currently used widely in the professional world.

    FCP7 – 1 or 2 years before redundent

I think I’ll get to grips with the basics of Adobe, get my head round the trickier side of Avid, but ultimatly continue editing on FCP7 until I get laughed at (or preferable just before then)

Surely once Apple implament broadcast monitor support, more plugins, OMF (not using that plug-in, forgot the name), tape support etc it’ll be a contender?
    Cheers for your input!
