    MacPro with OSX 10.6.8
Software using is Compressor 3.5.3 & Mpeg Streamclip 1.9.2
Current codec h.264 .mov from Canon 600d
    Desired codecProRes 422
    For TV broadcast

    Hi folks

Transcoding a lot of h.264’s from a 600d, to ProRes 422. Compressor seems to really struggle with the h.264’s, it becomes unresponsive and sluggish when trying to add a setting to just one clip let alone the 600 or so I need to batch convert.

So I’ve found that using batch convert in Mpeg streamclip is much more responsive and never crashes.

I am not doing any upscaling or anything just a straight transcode… do you think this is ok? I’ve heard Mpeg streamclip is not as good as compressor, but considering I am not actually upping the res or standards converting I am hoping this will be acceptable?

I can’t tell the difference but I am not an online editor.

    Thanks
    Tom

    Hey Tom –

Pardon the delay. MPEG Streamclip is perfect for this task. When I first started shooting HDSLR, I had the same workflow questions/concerns as you. DP Philip Bloom provided great insight. Not that you need a tutorial (obviously) but his vid on this matter:

It’s faster (in general) because Compressor is ‘network aware’.

It shouldn’t become sluggish, period though. It may hiccup if you have sent an FCP project and you click on it (while it communicates with FCP). That can be a second slowdown (but again, higher in quality.)

If you’re doing a straight transcode, MPEG streamclip is fine.
