SD widescreen is not 1:1 on a square pixel monitor.

PAL widescreen video has 720×576 pixels. You should set your monitor to 16×9 if it has that setting (i don’t think it does, the dell monitors are horrible at dealing with aspect ratios)

  • I’ve always like PELTOR headsets – they are the only way you can hear comms on rock shows in front of a PA running at 115dB + !

They do a helicopter headset with the correct (ie stupid) 32ohm earphone impedance for the BMD camera converters. Someone has them on fleabay for a reasonable price

As a side note I wish BMD would do a professional version of the camera converter with opticon connectors / analog return video / genlock and a headset impedance more suited to professional headsets (150 ohms or something would be more reasonable – 300 would make the comms LOUD )

  • I use the TPLink Gigabit switches – they are cheap as chips, fast, have internal PSUs and come with the rack ears included.

What more could you want (OK it would be better if they were not a nasty brown colour, but beggars can’t be choosers!)

I would recommend you look at Transmac software as a replacement for MacDrive. It’s much better in my experience.

Have you specifically tested that Mike? or are you reposting the speculation from atemuser.com ?

AFAIK the camera is not in production yet, and the specs are blackmagic specs so they could well be completely different to the actual spec of the product on release (and in turn the first couple of firmware updates may add or remove a whole load of stuff)

I would not believe too much of what BMD sales tell you, often the subtleties between things such as 25p and 20PsF are way too technical for them to have any hope of understanding!

why not just run your old games systems through some kind of scaler which can output proper NTSC? Personally I’d rather see the time and money spent on fixing the HD bugs than wasted supporting capture of old games (which you have no legal right to capture anyway!)

June 6, 2012 at 10:57 pm in reply to: Multiple Hyperdecks for HD Playback

rs422 is a bit broken at the moment, I’ve been hoping / trying to use an Ashvale SM2 slomo controller with the HyperDeck but have had issues with the timecode being incorrect.

I’m hoping they may fix this in some future firmware upgrade? Or just support deck control from the ATEM switchers?? Either would be OK with me, the current firmware is basically unusable for playback currently.

Personally I’d simply like someone to produce a low cost (sub £5000) studio camera system.

The large sensor trend has proven that you can get decent (well acceptable anyway) images for not so much money. But the interconnectivity we need for multicam simply isn’t an option until you have £20,000 per camera budgets.

Could we not have a split head system with a fibre link between head and base station? Ideally with a small 3 chip head with a B2 mount and opticon output which links to a 1u rackmount brain with knobs for the basic CCU commands (iris, colour balance, gain, pedestal etc)

I don’t see why this is not already in production by someone? Come on Blackmagic this type of camera is now the only missing link in the low cost live production environment.

    Yes good points Shaun.

Personally I’d like to see maybe just one additional “low bitrate” option added for extended record times ideally this would be DNxHD 36 – giving over 10 hours on an affordable SSD drive, at a better quality than internal recording on the majority of affordable cameras. (ie better than XDCam EX)

Regarding the HFS+ format it is extremely annoying and something that should be dumped ASAP. exFAT is the way forward for these drives in the future as it is properly cross-platform and supports very large files.

In the meantime I totally recommend Transmac as an alternative to macdrive – it simply works a lot better.

I do find it kind of odd that people don’t read the specs of things properly before they buy. If the Hyperdecks cost 5x the price they do then most of these complaints would simply not exist, as people would of really investigated before they buy and not expect any great compatibility with 8 year old HDV cameras from devices which would be seen as broadcast orientated!

    Cheers
    Tom

    They already do timecode.

I don’t understand how you think closed captioning would be needed for an on camera recorder?
