Try this. In Photoshop, open your jpgs, go to Image file menu, select Mode – make sure they are 8 bits/channel and RGB.

It’s hard to say without knowing what your other hardware is and how you acquire your HD footage. How many PCIe slots and at what speeds are needed? Do you need USB 3.0 or FW? You say Full HD, so are you coming SDI-HD from an HDCAM deck to some kind of hardware? What HD format are you editing?
There are a lot of good options available, but more info would be needed to make any kind of suggestion.

Not sure why you’d be slowing down… but under the Sequence File Menu you can select to delete renders – this will delete your timeline preview renders. Then under Preferences, you can select Media – in there you’ll find a button to ‘Clean’ the Media Cache Database.
    You could try those.

Larry – as Walter mentioned, Drobo isn’t built for speed. Especially if you are pulling that footage through ethernet. You would get better performance using the USB or FW ports instead. And if you REALLY want to share it, you can share it from your local computer and share across your network, but if anyone pulls anything from it while you are working, it will slow you down even more.

Larry – Need clarification… So are you trying to edit your Prores video from the Drobo through the Ethernet connection? Or are you just needing to move it off faster before editing the footage?

Stripe them in a RAID-0 from Disk Utility. Will make the 3 drives appear as 1.

Well, you could always stripe the 3 drives together. It will give you faster transfer rates for video – more real-time layers. Just need to organize it so you can locate stuff.
The CUDA cards will help with PPro’s Mercury Engine. The benefit to AE and PS will be with the OpenGL support.

The amount of HDD space you need depends on your needs. What do you edit? HDV – Uncompressed? Do you need a ton of space and do you archive old projects or do they sit on your HDD? But, I would just put in 3 drives and RAID-0 them together. Find some external drives to archive and backup to. If you can’t afford a backup, use 2 of the internal drives in RAID-0 and the third as backup. But def have some kind of backup in place!

If you can find one, go ahead and get the GTX285. You will most likely get better performance from the 4000 or 4800, even with your 3D apps, but the Cuda cards will help you in PPro.

Todd isn’t too far off… it will run CS5, but you may want to add some RAM if you are planning on sticking with that system. Not much else you can do to upgrade an iMac, except buy a new one.

Let me ask this… You say when you render in Pr it is showing this. Is that a Preview Render or render out to another file? Reason I ask is I had something before with using hardware acceleration and wiping between PNG files. It would kind of double up, so a drop shadow would seem twice as strong during the transition when rendering the preview, but rendering out the final product with AME to another file it would be fine. I was able to switch to using software only rendering and the problem would be gone.
I haven’t seen it in the manner you’re describing, but it sounds similar enough.
