First off all, DV is the worst way to plan to shoot and test keying. Keylight hates DV footage and you will never get a decent key. If you are shooting HD, you should have no problem with your smoke wisps. But if that is a concern, why smoke in the first place? Is it vital to the story? If not, don’t smoke.

Invest in the DVCproHD codec. There are a few sites that offer it for sale, one being:
or try downloading the Avid codec pack and use either DV100 or DNxHD. Otherwise you can use the QT Animation codec. Like Mr. T said, H.264 is for web and for low-res QT files to send to client for work-in-progress approvals…

You could also try animating the levels with wiggler…

Hi Tabitha,
My only thought is to use QT to export a sequence from each of your QT files (I assume they play back fine in QT outside of AE?) and then replace your QT sources in AE with the file sequences.

Did you solve your issue? One other thing that comes to mind is how big are your QT source files and how much RAM do you have?

In the comp settings dialog Advanced tab. Adjust the shutter angle and phase to your liking…

Not sure what you mean. When you bring the sequence into the timeline does it appear in the layers list? Does the sequence have alpha?
