December 22, 2005 at 3:43 pm in reply to: (moving) camera techniques – instruction?

    Hey Pat,

I am not aware of any dvd’s or books on “camera moves” because a “camera move” is usually an act of emotion and it’s intention is to motivate some response to/from the viewer. Other than general mobility hand held usually creates an edge to the look and feeling of the image. Steadicam is great for smooth mobility and the ability to follow a subject through a scene. Anyway, I hope you get the point. I think each application is motivated by whatever emotion you want to convey to the scene. You may want to consult some photo books on composiiton if I have totally missed the point of the question however.

Another point to consider is style and experience. Case in point. Panasonic is using a very experienced ASC DP to test their hvx200. Haskel Wexler ASC has shot projects with video. Allen Daviau ASC has shot projects with mini-DV. Mike Figgis did a movie on DV. There are many others. While equipment is important to many projects it is still a tool and if used in the right hands can produce some amazing results. So, keep in mind while you are looking for the “right equipment”, you will also want to be looking for your own style and experience. That is the kind of thing that brings clients back.

Yeah, it is possible to articulate the arm out far enough to shoot yourself,
sort of speak. Did he have his hands free, or was he holding an arm?
He could have had the man-cam on.

check out Geo Camera in LA. Might have this setup.

    Michael,
Not sure what kind of diffusion they use on csi. But, there are many reasons for using filtration in front of the lens. Many are personal choices. For one thing, you can determine what the the diffusion will look like in your frame at that time. What if you were unable to get to post session and your editor was free to add his own diffusion. I personally don’t think it is the same electronically. but, i’m sure it is becoming more and more transparent.

July 12, 2005 at 1:51 am in reply to: using a light meter with DV question

    Michael,

I must say with an altered degree of experience, I have never seen anyone using a light meter with DV. the first HD job I shot I used my incident meter for a reference of the key level. Only to see what the asa of the camera was. after that I never used it again. However, indulges as they may be, I guess anything goes and I would use it like you are shooting film and see what corresponds and what doesn’t. Please post results.

    Kristin,
I believe 24 is shot with 2 cameras in traditional film style. And lighting for 2 cameras is never a chore. As a mater of fact, some of the best shots I have done are shots where we have used the 2nd camera for a close up or detail, such as hands moving, panning back and forth between dialogue, etc.
As far as synching, I assume you are trying to use a switcher and switch between shots? As far as assignments of cameras,
depends on blocking of scene. If 2 people are sitting across from one another then have a wider shot of both people and put your 2nd camera in for a close-up, and then have a 3rd camera on a nice profile.

  • Rich,
Should work. I used a roto-pola this same way for ext. But test it.

Possibly on the wide side of the lens.Keep filters close to front element and you should be ok. Unfortunately, only way to know is to test it out.

check out other shots that interest you. I like having something close in foreground with your subject in background. Europe is great for this. Also, get a tiffen filter kit to fit your lens with nd grads, tobacco grads, blue grads, etc, any color grad you like. you can use them in a variety of ways, above, below, sideways, etc a little goes a long way.

    best of luck,
