There’s a simple example in After Effects Help that shows how to make a seemingly random set of letters change to become a target word: “Example: Offset characters”

Affirming what David said: The issue is that the spatial interpolation for your keyframes is Bezier, not linear. You can either change this for keyframes after they’ve been created, or you can change the default. For more information, see the interploation section of After Effects Help.

A mask is a path that is used to define an area of transparency. Very crudely speaking, you draw a mask and it essentially says “Anything outside this shape is transparent; anything inside is opaque.”

A matte is a layer whose values (for example, brightness values) are used by a different layer to define areas of transparency.

Transitions are not fully supported when copying and pasting between After Effects and Premiere Pro and importing a Premiere Pro project into After Effects. Copying and pasting and importing a project do not use Dynamic Link, though. Dynamic Link is an entirely different and newer set of functionality. Transitions should be transferred when using Dynamic Link. That’s why I asked exactly what steps were taken. I know that sometimes people say that they’re using “Dynamic Link” when they’re actually just using one of the older ways of moving data between After Effects and Premiere Pro.
