Here’s an After Effects Community Help search for ‘8.0.1’ that returns pages that give information about the After Effects 8.0.1 update.

Here’s a partial list of changes in 8.0.1:
The update enables OpenGL on Mac OS 10.4.10 and higher. For the newest MacBook Pros with NVIDIA display chipsets, you will also need to install the MacBook Pro Software Update from Apple. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to download and install Mac OS updates.

Other fixes in the update include:
* OpenGL is not disabled by default on Windows Vista with ATI chipsets. (Make sure you are using the Catalyst 7.6 or later driver from ATI.)
* H.264 codec handling updates.
* Layer Styles dialog when importing a PSD file now functions correctly for non-English languages.
* Byte order is handled correctly for the newest version of the Apple Uncompressed 4:2:2 10-bit YUV codec.

I don’t know whether this will help for your specific purpose, but strokes on shape layers do have line cap options that include squared-off ends.

You can use Trim Paths on the shape paths to make the lines grow and reveal.

Yes, if you have auto-save turned on.

Also, have you updated past After Effects 9.0.0 yet? After Effects 9.0.1 fixed a bug that prevented some information from being saved. It’s really important that people update to take advantage of the bug fixes that have been released for After Effects CS4.

from the “Region of interest” section of After Effects Help:

“To create the equivalent of a region of interest for a single layer, you can draw a temporary mask around the part of the layer that you are working with. The area outside of the mask will not be rendered. This can make working with a small portion of a large layer much faster. Be careful, though, since not rendering the pixels outside of the mask can change the composition’s appearance significantly.”

So, try masking out part of your layer when the camera is zoomed in close. Remember, you can animate mask paths, so you could have the mask size change to suit the camera frame.

Are you using color management? If so, one thing to be aware of is that colors will be converted to sRGB on output when you create a SWF file from After Effects. I don’t know if this explains your issue, since I can’t see what you’re seeing, but it is the one “gotcha” that I know of with regard to colors output to SWF.

There’s a whole section on getting consistent color when exporting to SWF in the “Color management workflow in After Effects CS4” paper.

You can print the PDF, which you can download from any of the pages of After Effects Help on the Web.

The benefit of doing that is that that PDF is new as of… [checks calendar]… twelve days ago. Any printed manual that you would’ve gotten in the box would have been necessarily incomplete and, well, crappy. (I get to say that since I made the crappy books that you got with the previous few versions.) I think that it’s great that I get to keep improving the After Effects documentation—largely based on your feedback—for months after the software has shipped.

Regarding searching the After Effects Help document: If you have any trouble finding what you’re looking for, let me know. As many folks on this forum already know, I’m more than happy to serve as a sort of living index for After Effects information. It helps me, too, since I can then go and look at what keywords I can add, et cetera, to make finding things easier for the next person.
