Yes. They removed a lot of useful keys from the MacBook Pro keyboards.
In this post I point out another useful feature that these maddeningly incomplete, crippled sub-keyboards make really hard to get to and use. There are many such features.

What version of After Effects? If you’re running After Effects CS4, have you installed the After Effects CS4 (9.0.2) update?

That symbol just doesn’t exist on the new MacBook Pro keyboards, since Apple entirely removed the numeric keypad.
You can remap the command to a different shortcut, get an external (USB) numeric keypad, or even use an iPhone app to turn an iPhone into an external numeric keypad.

One possibility:
If you’re being overly aggressive with the use of the Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously multiprocessing feature, starving some of the processes of RAM, then After Effects can take a little time to shut down a few of the processes so that it can keep going.
If you’ve only got 12GB of RAM, you probably shouldn’t be using all of your processor cores in an 8-core system, but instead should leave a few for other applications.

“To include the alpha channel in the FLV output, use the On2 VP6 codec and select Encode Alpha Channel in the Video tab of the export settings dialog box.”

More detail, please. What kind of file are you creating? A QuickTime movie? If so, what codec are you using? Are you using color management? What version of After Effects are you using?

You didn’t mention which version of After Effects you’re using. Unicode character support got much better in After Effects CS4.

DNxHD somewhat recently added alpha channel support (or at least this is what I read a year or so ago). Maybe you don’t have a recent enough version of the codec.

If you’re using the CC Particle World effect, then the first thing to try would be decreasing the Velocity property’s value.
