Todd,
I just realized how much posting you’ve been doing lately!
Make sure you give back what you take from the ‘cow’The connectors didn’t change for the XL1 to the XL2 as far as the mini plug interface.
So any of the beachtek’s should work. The 2 trade offs for beachtek or Canon’s MA 100/200- is on the Canon MA 200 you can configure it so you are recording an input from a mic or line on the adapter AND still choose one channel for the shotgun mic in the front. (it’s trick, but do-able)
WIth the beachtek, you can’t get the shotgun signal if you’re using the box. But the box is easier to use.Good Luck,

June 14, 2005 at 4:56 pm in reply to: nearly ready to get the new Final Cut Suite…. just need to do a clean install of OS10.4[Todd George] “by the way I have installed OS4x on both my machines already but FC suite requires so much space and I have the academic version so no true upgrade for me which is why I think the clean install is best
“I understood everything, until that? ‘not a true upgrade?’
The academic versions behaves no different than the consumer versions.I’m sure you’ll find some different opitions on what is the best way to optimize a Mac system. We usually end up doing clean install about every year, although my system has everything on it and I don’t do a clean install unless I have to. My system is very stable.
Most of the info you’ll want to keep, bookmarks, pref, etc. are located in your ‘home’ directory, in your library folder. (safari, explorer, etc)
For downloads, I usually try to keep a backup of the dowloaded file, not the app. THis way you know it will install into the correct location, with all of the components and you save time by not having to download the file again. We running FCP 4.5 on Mac 2.5 dual, but were still on 10.3, not tiger.
I wasn’t really sure if you are upgrading to Tiger??
If so, it would be my recommendation to do a clean install, just because your Mac is a little older. When we upgrade next month, we probably won’t do a clean install, but some of our computers are only a couple months old.Good Luck

It seems like an obvious chioce would be fluorescent. As far as heat, nothing comes close.
I do understand about your height issue. We have a Studio that is hung with 10′ truss. So after the lights go in with adapters it can hang low. You can do some tweaking of the clamps/adapters to choke up as much as possible. Other than that, location of the talent, camera, and ligths would need to be adjusted to make sure they are out of the shot.
Any room without AC that you are using as a Studio, will always be a problem. But I’m sure you knew that.Good Luck,

Hi Bob,
Not going to be much help. I did see in TV Tech Magazine where Rololights won an award. I spent quite a bit of time in the Lighting/Grip area at NAB and didn’t see them. Also, I wanted to post to your post about NAB gear a while ago, but never got around to it. Sorry.
But I didn’t see much new in the way of new lighting gear at NAB. don’t get me wrong, lots of cool stuff, just nothing that new. But obviously I missed the Rololight. 🙂Desisti & Arri have some lights that employ a new technology in the ballast the use less power and produce more light. DeSisti also have a Florencent package to use for a keylight background that have blue and green Tubes in the fixtures, so you can change keys with the flip of a switch.
Dedo had some cool new stuff, but not sure how much anyone would care about them. (expense wise)
I didn’t Look at the Lowel Booth.
Kino, Mole, and K5600 were steady on.
for the quick recap at NAB.FWIW

First off, I love the two, 2 Divas I have. Having the ballast on the fixture is much easier.
At NAB I finally got a chance to look at the Moles in person. I knew about them from my sales rep, about a year ago, but didn’t get to touch one until a month ago. They seem like they have a sturdy construction. The thing that blew me away about the Moles was that they are voltage dimmable. This is a hugh feature for our TV Studio. I already have some ParaBeams hung from the grid, but I have to control them from the ballast on the back. I wish the Moles Biax were around when I bought the ParaBeams. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Parabeams. But to be able to control the light output through our existing dimmer board would have been a big benefit.
You really can’t lose with Kinos or Mole’s.
Not to confuse anything, but Leo, would you recommend the Kino’s over the Mole’s?
Leo, do you use the Mole’s for Keylights? Or just for background?

God, it’s been years….but some key combination will allow you to batch digitize with new Hardware settings.
I think you hold down shift while selecting batch dig. or option or shift option. It’s one of the 3. You’ll see right away. I’d check for you, but I’m laying off a long program.

Subject: 640 to 720 Redigitizing?I’m pretty sure this question has been answered, but when I tried to do it, it didn’t work?
I want to redigitize my beta footage from 640 to 720. I tried holding down control & shift and batch digitize selected, it notifies me that I want to change video standards, but when I go to digitize, nothing happens? The Digitize window says that the clip is “done”, even though I changed my hardware settings.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks,

Subject: Re: 640 to 720 Redigitizing? You have to change your Hardware settings first. REmove all graphics from the program etc.
But the clue is that your Hardware has to be in the new setting first, before you go to the Batch capture.

That should do it.

June 3, 2005 at 10:25 pm in reply to: Floh is a One Man Tech Department: Kudos To Floh!!!Well said Mike.
Although I hope that most of the Media 100 cow users recognized this long ago!!
I have often wanted to response to a particular post, only to be writen-faster, better, and more percise by Floh.Just as a point of clarification, while Floh is not on any Media 100 payroll, I’m sure he has, in the past, recieve some money from Media 100 as a consultant/demo artist/etc. He was the main demo guy for Media 100 844x roll out at NAB, 3 years ago. Purple hair and all. This shouldn’t take anything away from the amazing contributions that Floh has made around here. But just so you know.
Again, Hooray for FLOH!! (I’d say something in German if I knew any)

I heard all kinds of different stories, related to fonts. When our gfx artist migrated up to 10.2, he decided to use Font Book instead of Suitcase. He had all kinds of problems,5min start ups, laggy, hanging, crashing, etc. Finally the Mac just stop working, so he had to do a clean install, then started using Suitcase again. I on the other hand, can’t get Suitcase to run well for me. Also, I’ve heard other people have a lot of success with Font Book. Never can tell.
I definatly would NOT try to import hundreds of fonts all at once. Actaully, I tried that a while back, crashed Font Book everytime. Plus, it’s not a good idea to have anymore than 100 fonts active at anytime.
But the underling theme, BEWARE of Fonts! Tread slowly.
Good Luck,
