[lance herring] “So if some of you are actually using DV50 material, how does that work? if it’s not done via firewire, how is it acquired, edited, and output back to tape?”

I capture SDI via Matrox DTV card into DV50. I also use the free DV50 codec from Matrox to render out files in Vegas, whether going back through the DTV card or not. DV50 plays very nice with 1394 previews. I like to use the DV50 codec to render graphics segs and sub-segments because of it’s great quality and 4:2:2 color space, plus it’s tiny file size compared to uncompressed.

    Free Matrox codecs: https://www.matrox.com/video/support/ds/software/home.cfm
You get MJPEG, MJPEG lossless, DV50, DV25, and MPEG2 I-Frame codecs from the one install.

I would like to encourage EVERYONE to contact the Vegas team and let them know you want Panasonic support! I use DV50 files in Vegas often, but you can’t capture or output via 1394. 🙁

    Go to https://mediasoftware.sonypictures.com/support/productsuggestion.asp
and fill out the form requesting Panasonic support.

I’d really like to see Vegas do FULL support for all the Panasonic products including DVCPro HD! Now while I like XDCam much better than P2, I still need to get both types of HD projects out for clients. The major networks are split between 1080i and 720P. Vegas should support EVERYTHING out there.

Please — everyone take the time to let Sony know that DV50 and DVCPro100 *should* be supported.

Whichever platform you work on — you’ll face very similar problems. I’ve had just as many crashes and quirks on Windows based systems and Mac OSX based. I’ve seen lemons on both sides, and I’ve also seen rock solid systems of both types.

Keep in mind — they are ALL computers made up of parts that can and do fail from time to time.

Sounds to me like you should look at getting a decent system instead of trying to do it yourself. Buy a Dell or other from a reputable dealer who will back up their wares.

  • I’ve been using Decklink with Vegas for some time now. Firewire drives absolutely won’t cut it. You must have some type of raid array. I’m running ten 10,000RPM Cheatahs at Raid 0. No probs with data rates or dropped frames.

I/O is fine with Vegas 6 controlling the DigiBeta deck. You *MUST* have TONS of drive space for uncompressed. In this initial release of Decklink support, you can only do uncompressed capture and output. Anything you bring into the project that is not uncompressed, will have to be rendered to uncompressed in order to print to tape. You’ll have to manage your disk space accordingly. (Example — you bring in some DV footage to include — it will have to be converted to uncompressed in order to print to tape).

Vegas captures directly to the Sony YUV uncompressed codec, and renders to this codec in a Decklink project. Sony YUV video is approximately 75 Gigs per hour.

You can capture and batch capture from Digibeta, and also print to tape wtih RS-422 control.

It is SOOOO nice to now be previewing everything at full uncompressed on an SDI monitor. I’ve always doen uncompressed composites in Vegas (since version 3) but would have to view it through a 1394 device. It’s such a difference now to preview it at uncompressed, and keep it uncompressed to tape.

One other thing I meant to add:

When editing projects that consist mostly of video footage, there’s no need to set rendering to “Best”. “Good – Full” is all you need. The only time you need to go to “Best” is when sourcing elements that are higher resolution than your current project, such as digital pictures or computer screen shots. Otherwise, you’ll just increase your render times for no visible benefit.

Mary — make sure your render quality is set to “best” for this type work. If “best” doesn’t fix it for you, then try adding a super sampling enevelope with a setting around 4. Super Sampling will definitely make it crystal clean, but at a cost of render time. Experiement a bit on a short segment to get the right quality to render time ration that is acceptable to you.

    Hi Rick,

There is no “acceleration” hardware for Vegas. Vegas is stricly a software only app which means the faster computer and storage you can throw at it, the more performance you’ll get. I’d suggest you use your preview resolutions and ram previews to get your effects tweaked before the final renders.

As to advanced training: I’m currently working with Class on Demand on such a product. If all continues on course, it should be available this summer.

Yes — I agree. I’d hate to edit multicam without it. Excalibur’s multi-cam has been so impressive that Pinnacle, Canopus, and even Apple have copied from it.

If you saw Excalibur running with all the cameras mapped to keys, with the nice tally system — you’d understand. Also, if you saw how you can switch out cameras on the fly while even playing after running the wizard with the option to “add as takes” then you’d really, really understand. For me, it’s about my time and my time = money. I’ve paid for Excalibur over and over and over in the time it has saved me. It has so many tools, I’d say that you can pay for it in just one job.

But — you are correct in that you can do all the things Excalibur does for yourself. It just takes time.

BTW — Thanks Edward and Gary for listening to my wish lists. Excalibur 4 is my #1 “must have” for Vegas.

    David — great job!
I’ve enjoyed the looks on everyone’s faces when I’ve shown how well the Cineform HDV plays back.

    Here’s a tip:
First — make sure you’ve saved your current project. Second, do a “save as” into a new project and delete everything but your area with the pictures you’ve described. Now change your project settings to be a larger size. (Like 1440×960). Now, setup your zooms in that project, and then nest that .veg into your original project.
You can also just setup positions in the larger project, then do pan/crop on them (directly on the nested .veg) in the 720×480 project.

Experiment a bit with this and I think you’ll find the results you are looking for.
