Sadly, unlike Joseph Owens and Michael Hendrix, I was forced to watch the whole thing. You have got to be kidding me. And to echo Shane Ross: “students are not good at organizing”? I will go way further than Shane and say that editing is organization. It is 90% organization and 10% art. If you need a crutch for organization in any discipline you are screwed. I give the edge to people thinking for themselves and their own needs and not paying the slightest attention to those who do not have to deliver programming in the real world. Forty-five minutes of my life taken that were wholly useless and that I will never get back. Can you bill someone for that?

The bottom line is that they seem to feel they have a big enough “fan base” to withstand all. I guess we’ll see.

Yes, they continue to sell licenses for FCP 7/FCS3. The big question is: Do they continue to support them?

Audio, nine times out of ten, tells the story I am being paid to tell. Visuals support the story. Which is one reason I have problems with FCP X. It makes decisions for me that I don’t want made. And to get it to do what I want is a long series of dubious workarounds. Not that Legend was not also a series of workarounds in some cases. But in Legend I generally did not have to out think the software. I certainly have worked in situations where the picture was primary but they are few and far between at least for me. Words tell stories.

I think that this is probably the way of the future. I don’t know anyone under thirty who subscribes to cable. Doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Just that I don’t know them.

An automobile compared to software? A mechanical device with hard, easily demonstrable and definable differences compared to something that exists only as numbers on recordable media? That analogy I don’t get.

And to think that kind of thing was the easy way. At least we didn’t have to brush on iron solution and cut with razor blades, though I do admit to trying it once – just for fun.

Still works and still stable is a good argument but I don’t know if I agree with the concept that FCP was ever stable (maybe reliable is a better word.) I went to FCP (legacy, or legend as some folks now call it) like pretty much everyone else because of cost. Also when FCP came out it appealed to a lot of pissed off Avid editors. But I never forgot that Avid beat FCP all to hell with regard to media management. I can and always have been able drag anything, anywhere in Avid without fear of screwing something up. Try gathering up all your sequences in FCP 7 and putting them in a folder. It’s been a problem for years and one that Apple never addressed in any significant way. Not to mention the fact that on long form projects I must keep creating new projects lest they get large and corrupted. Kind of like the FCP X file bloat problem which, as far as I know, has yet to be dealt with. I have always liked Mac as a platform but after more than a year I am not feeling the love from Apple as far as broadcast and film workflows go. I guess we shall see.

I just love this guy’s movies. They are not all – if any are -great but he is not afraid to go way out on a limb.
