For me just having markers that will ripple with the timeline is worth the $300.

Dissolves are probably OK. As speed changes would involve controlling the dynamic tracking of a tape machine I’m guessing not.

Your best bet is to arrange to do a test with your post house to determine what does and doesn’t work.

In the EDL options sort by master. This is the equivalent of a mode assembly.

But be warned, this is reliable mostly with simple cuts. Most effects wont translate. And don’t have more than 4 channels of audio.

Thanks Grinner. I did just send a new round of invoices with as much
interest as the law allows. Thankfully I do not have the bashful problem.
I’m pretty direct and I’ll call anybody.

November 18, 2008 at 6:24 pm in reply to: mixing HDV and DVCPRO HD

Thanks Chris. I posted that just before running our the door this
morning and didn’t really state the question properly.

From reading posts and talking to others I know that some people
have trouble with editing HDV and others don’t. So, assuming
I had no problem, and I end up with a cut of my documentary
rendered in ProRes from a mixed timeline, would that
rendered show be in essence the same quality as if I had
captured that material in ProRes to begin with? If so I would
be able to do any color correction/compositing with a picture
locked ProRes sequence. The doc I’m about to cut has about
50-70 hours worth of footage and it would be a significant
budgetary saving If the HDV was captured as HDV. Sorry that
was so long-winded, but that is my dilemma. I appreciate
your help. Sorry to waste your time with that first post.

Maybe its because I’ve been working w/ FCP so long, but I avoid the MM like the plague.

I tend to work on projects that have massive amounts of talking head footage (for which the producers will not pay for transcripts). I just capture large chunks – usually at reduced res – edit and then when the time comes recapture I export the sequence as an EDL then import the EDL to a new sequence and recapture from that. Its simple and quick and has never failed to work for me as long as proper reel info is logged.
