  • EDL CMX3600 A-mode in FCP??

Posted by Sean Bale on May 18, 2009 at 12:17 pm

I’ve been asked to export an EDL for ONLINE in standard CMX3600 A-mode…

When in AVID, there is a “A-MODE” checkbox, when exporting this type of EDL…

UNFORTUNATELY, this project is in FCP, and the “A-MODE” setting isn’t there!!

I know it has something to do with sorting method; but not sure exactly what…

How to I export an “A-MODE” cmx3600 EDL from Final Cut Pro? Which settings would do the trick?

ANY help greatly appreciated !! THX!

    Hi Soren,
It seems that no A Mode in FC.
    I’ve found this thread:

I’ve been having a look in Google and there are some references to the CMX 3600 A Mode.
I have the impression that this format was needed by AVID before the implementation of the EDL Manager.

In the EDL options sort by master. This is the equivalent of a mode assembly.

But be warned, this is reliable mostly with simple cuts. Most effects wont translate. And don’t have more than 4 channels of audio.

    THX!!

But thats the case with EDLs in general right? (that most effects wont tranfer)

The EDL is for online at a post-house. All FX-work will be done later.

BUT; I have done several speed-changes in clips (not keyframed variables, just constant speed alterations) and a few dissolves. Will those transfer?

    Soren

Simple a to b effects, like wipes and dissolves, generally translate well
although the info is just speed and direction.

speed changes may not, and usually because cmx speed notation is a note called a Motion Memory or M2 that some systems can read and others cant.

you should contact someone at the post house who has done this workflow, and find out what he/she needs, and how they address issues.

    hope this helps

Dissolves are probably OK. As speed changes would involve controlling the dynamic tracking of a tape machine I’m guessing not.

Your best bet is to arrange to do a test with your post house to determine what does and doesn’t work.
