Decoding and encoding is CPU-based, while effects rendering moves to the GPU for CUDA-enabled effects, as well as post-decode processes like color space conversions and scaling (HD video in a less than HD sized window during editing that still looks good takes serious scaling work).
I would guess that a non-Hyperthreded i5 processor is working its tail off just trying to get the frames queued up for the waiting GPU.
Also…with CUDA enabled, “max quality” is actually working on those effects, so your results would likely be as good, but faster if you uncheck that box unless you’re exporting a scaled-down output clip. I wouldn’t turn it on for preview renders for editing 8-bit footage…

Fantastic.
I do know that the NanoFlash (I have one…they’re pretty useful IMO) utilizes data rates that are technically the same type of file as XDcamEX/HD files, but since they unlock higher data rates than Sony does for the XDcamHD format (as well as I-frame capability at a few data rates, etc), it’s not really the same “format” in the sense of an NLE recognizing it. There have been a couple releases in the past where supporting higher NanoFlash data rates took a patch or an update.

I have a PDX10…
I’m not sure what would happen if you tried to capture in a newer version of PPro, but the audio from a PDX10 was never captured properly in CS3 and CS4 for some reason that never, to my memory, was resolved.
I stopped using the PDX10 quite a while back, and I haven’t tried to capture anything from it since then…I typically had to capture from the PDX10 on Vegas to get both audio channels captured properly.

It does appear he’s seeing the codec multithread on the CPU…so if nothing else, Adobe is working some magic there.

I think that the interoperability between PPro and SpeedGrade is far from static.
…and the CC apps are updated periodically, so technically the feature layout can change any day…maybe even one day very soon.

How do you determine RED codecs are multithreading a single stream decode? Premiere Pro multithreads its operations of course…
Adobe has some special stuff they do with several formats, shuffling frames and so forth, but the actual decoders are pretty serial animals…it’s why they aren’t jumping to GPU very quickly…and why in the testing I’ve done, CPU clock speed increase trumps CPU core count increase for specifically decode/encode. The processes of interpolation, color conversion, scaling, etc, all need to be done to present the video visually, and many of those processes are multithreaded (and GPU-based in ideal circumstances), but those processes are after the decoding operation.
I have noticed that RED decoders will spawn multiple iterations when I check the running processes, however…each running on a separate core, but I’ve never seen one clip using more than one process at a time. (It’s what keeps RED Rockets selling).
