December 17, 2010 at 1:00 pm in reply to: premiere CS5 vs CS3 – why adobe did that to us ?

You don’t have any third party plugins in CS3 that you don’t have in CS5 do you? I know Pinnacle’s bigger system was sureally fast with Premiere and TGAs once upon a time…

For the most part, if the system you are running on is spec’d to run CS5 (which means it would be a monster for CS3), I don’t know why you’d experience this…

I know that the use of TGS frame sequences has dropped of significantly over the last ten years, but I have no knowledge of PPro somehow dropping (or altering) support for them.

December 14, 2010 at 9:14 pm in reply to: Why is premiere unable to utilize my processor?

[Gaven Eogan] “By multi-processor I assume you mean a dual socket motherboard such as SR-2 running two Intel Xeon processors… ie. a server configuration”

I missed the “server configuration” piece the first time…

I honestly would have to sit and think a while to come up with someone I know who is a post production professional who has run anything but muulti-processor workstations since DV…and even then I think everyone I knew was running multiprocessor (even before there was multiple cores of course…)

It’s not a server configuration…it’s a workstation. If you saw those cores light up when you start doing anything with multiple layers in HD of any kind…you’d see what it takes to run a decode on DSLR or AVCHD H264…or RED 4K…just brute CPU force.

Our computing equipment keeps getting faster…but our workload seems to stay out ahead of us.

Do I realize how much it costs? Did you seriously just ask that question?

I need to update my system rather soon…and I have around 5K in my workstation…and that doesn’t include two Quadro display cards and AJA LHi video I/O and my fibre channel disk array.

For some reason the industry seems to think that Avid and FCP should run on big systems, but PPro should do more than either of them running on a home-use hardware configuration.

Premiere Pro is a professional video editing system…you need professional level hardware to make it perform. Just because it doesn’t prevent you from installin it or using it doesn’t mean the system you’re installing it in is adequate for all formats and workflows.

Have you run the most recent updates? There are several issues that have been addressed.

December 14, 2010 at 3:00 pm in reply to: Using one title in multiple instances with multiple effects

…but if I understand the question (and there’s always a possibility that I don’t), he wants common text content…uniformly available for revision from a base document…but he wants all the documents in the timelines with different style attributes to be drawing the text content from this base document, but for each title on each timeline to keep its individual style attributes.

A template is designed to sort of “vault” style attributes… and I’m not positive that a title document is in constant observation of a template it was created from…I think it’s more like an “import” where the content/styles et al are transferred from the template into the working document and the relationship breaks… Alex, have you tried this? I haven’t myself, so I’m surmising at the moment…

That was why I suggested the text document be a photoshop doc, but that the attributes that “style” it would have to be either adjustment layers in the doc, with the doc imported multiple times, each respecting different adjustment layers for the “styling” or perhaps video effects inside PPro…

That way, when the text is changed on the Photoshop doc, all the documents should update their content…

    Again…IF I understand the question.

December 13, 2010 at 6:36 pm in reply to: Curious about CS5 keyframes

    Oh…I’ve got it now.

While I can’t remember how the cursor reacted in CS3…(it must be positionable in between frames to be able to produce the extra keyframes “within” the single frame), I know I can’t seem to position the cursor in CS5 to do this now that I try to produce what you have here…

I don’t work with interlace material as a rule, so I don’t know if it will allow a keyframe to be tied to a “field” or not…

December 12, 2010 at 6:05 pm in reply to: Why is premiere unable to utilize my processor?

[David Ghast] “Sufficed to say i am not in the least surprised at this given adobes history of delivering barely functioning products.”

That’s kind of a bold statement considering how many of us are using this software and seem to be able to…muddle through.

I think that a multiple processor configuration has been recommended for AVCHD for CS5 from the time it was announced, (and PNG image sequences are not the same processor load as say, a QT clip compressed as PNG).

Multithreading across physical processors is different than multithreading across logical cores, and how the codec is configured is part of the deal…I would be curious how that figures in, as the PNG and AVCHD compression protocols aren’t Adobe code, of course.

Have you handled any other type of footage to track processor usage?

…of course if you have no other purpose here than to tell us of how Adobe makes nothing but “barely functioning” products, you may want to see how you can make that fly on the AE forum…or the Photoshop…maybe the Illustrator forum…lots of options for you.

You’re not exactly running a monster system there…you’re welcome to run any NLE you like on it and see how that works out…I’d suspect that Edius or Vegas MIGHT be able to do better on decode processor core utilization, but then they don’t have the Adobe integration or tool set, so as with all things, it’s give and take. It depends on what is the highest priority for you.

I suspect this would be possible with a Photoshop document…

You would have to restrict the “style” to PPro video effects…

December 10, 2010 at 5:33 pm in reply to: Curious about CS5 keyframes

Are you saying that this is a “bug”?

There is areason why they call them “keyframes”… Video editing systems process video a frame at a time, so even though there isn’t anything preventing you from putting more than one keyframe within the temporally defined video frame, the software can only create one frame in that spot…

Maybe I don’t understand your question… You’ve been able to keyframe audio in sub-frame increments since PPro since version 1.0.

December 10, 2010 at 5:23 pm in reply to: export to apple prores 422 in premiere cs5 on a mac

If you have an HDSDI or analog component output card on your machine, you could buy (or rent) an AJA KiPro and use it like a VTR…it will encode all incoming signals to ProRes.

It’s so weird to hear of someone saying they won’t buy FCP for a codec…so many seem to (at least when making the case for FCP over PPro to me) do exactly that.

In fact, I’d surmise from the way Apple has it tethered directly to FCP, even more than QT, that was exactly the intention. Overall it seems to be working for them on many levels…
