I’ll reply here as well since not everyone jumps all over the Cow.
The issue that Tom (and so many others) is running into is not a lack of tar support on OS X, but the inability of the OS X tar version to access a tape drive. Unlike a true Unix system where a tape drive is just another device that is accessed through a kernel hook, Apple decided to remove the tape layer from the Darwin kernel as it is quite complex to maintain.
This is why we created TOLIS Tape Tools in the first place. We have a lot of Unix users (Solaris, SCO, IRIX, etc.) moving from those platforms to OS X back in the day. They all had huge collections of data that was written to Unix tapes using tar and cpio (and in one case, dd) in addition to their BRU tapes. TTT allowed them to restore the data from those tapes directly to their Shiny new Mac systems without the need to keep the old platforms around.

Hi Tom,
Unfortunately, it’s not tar and OS X, it’s OS X’s deliberate removal of native tape support that has you stumped. This is exactly why we created TOLIS Tape Tools. They provide the missing layer between your tar tapes and getting the data only an OS X system, which, BTW, is quite complex.

Hi Tom,
That truly is the only way. The Mezzo format is a closely guarded (and most likely lost) format. If you don’t have a copy of Mezzo (on OS 9), you’re otherwise out of luck. Unfortunately, this is also one of the cited cases where using Proprietary software is bad.
I’ve got to get on a soap box about this for a few lines –
Because we’re aware of this issue, this is why BRU’s broad platform support and code escrow programs are so different when you look at archival and storage formats from the perspective of “proprietary”.
Because BRU:
- Runs on every platform out there
- Because we have existing and upcoming code escrow agreements with major organizations
- Because it’s in our corporate by-laws that if we ever decide to quit diong this and go fishing the source code will revert to non-restrictive, open source BSD License
Your data is very safe with BRU – now and into the future.

That redirection failure is a system problem. I hate to sound like a cliche, but “have you tried turning it off and back on again?” (reboot) – with Props to Roy and the entire IT Crowd team.

Unfortunately, the only option is to restore the Retrospect tapes to your system and then back the data up with BRU.

After looking at the logs for a hint, if you still have the installer for 9.0.6 around, I’d try reinstalling.
Also, might be a good idea to verify your Java installation if you’ve installed any Windows security updates.

Since you don’t rest your hand on the trackpad like you can on the tablets, this isn’t an issue. I suspect that if you don’t rest your hand on the Wacom, this also wouldn’t be an issue.
Just remember that you’re skimming whatever your mouse pointer is position on in the UI.

You still have to work palm-down, but the fact that you’re only moving your fingers instead of your arm has totally alleviated the pain that I use to suffer from after hours with a normal mouse.
Plus, no carpel-tunnel / sore forearm 🙂
