Are you hooking up more than one input/output device at a time?

Say the deck and a camera…or a Kona IO/LA device or Miranda? I just got advice on this below because I was sick having to swap devices all the time thinking that I could just get a hub and plug them all in.

Walter B. informed me that FCP will only allow one input/output device at a time. You can have hard drives etc. hooked up or multiple firewire ports being used, but not by i/o devices.

    Just a thought.

What I have found with LCDs is the best contrast ratio is the best way to go…you will pay for it, but you get a much better image for preview and playback. I am guessing you did not pay too much and the monitor that you have is a low contrast ratio.

I edit with two Samsung monitors that I paid over I think $400 each for 3-4 years ago…but they give incredible images for editing and some preview.

You cannot beat an NTSC monitor for color correction issues and playback. I use a Sony PVM-14L2 for standard and high def. scaled down via my Kona2/KBox.

If you are playing back HD or HDV…you will get the “jitters” which is inherit in this type of footage when viewing back on LCD just like viewing film transfers.

    Hope this helps some.

January 13, 2007 at 12:39 am in reply to: Working with .m2t files…HELP!!!

It will not record .mov in HDV mode…it only records .m2t in HDV mode. This is the QC Deck…not their previous product.

One of the painful things that I was informed about after plopping down $2000.00. Along with it not being able to timelapse in HDV, which I understand if you consider the GOP structures of the various HDV offerings, but I was informed that it would by the sales rep at the time of purchase.

He obviously was less informed than I was.

Maybe…but you cannot do a direct import of them into FCP after dragging the clips from the hard drive recorder to the internal drives of the editor.

    Thanks

  • Rennie…you have peeked my interest. I have used a lot Kramer products and have a high respect for them. However, I know they can be pricey.

What is the price tag on that switcher that you have?

    Thanks,

  • Thanks Walter…that sounds like what I need. The “only one powered on at a time” issue does not really bother me I guess…I am just sick of having to swap devices or firewire cables. Especially since my JVC HD100 has a firewire port shorting problem so I have to power down comp…to hook in the camera and power up progressively. What a pain!

I will look for a hube like you are talking about asap.

Now if I had the firewire card…could I keep multiple devices powered up? Just curious.

I can always count on the cow.

    Thanks all,

By the way…I am working with RAW files and the new Canon digital still file for RAW.

    Would that make a difference?

October 30, 2006 at 10:07 pm in reply to: How do I edit an .eps vector file?

The easiest way would be to use Illustrator(Adobe)rather than Photoshop.

In Photoshop you loose a lot of the “vector” utilization that you would be able to make use of in Illustrator.

Put the vector image in Ill. and blow it up ’til your heart is content…then make whatever edits you want to make.

Then “place” it in a Photoshop doc that is the size you want it to be…keeping in mind print/video use. A poor mans 3D in Photoshop is copy the top “placed” layer and drag it under the “master” layer. Using your arrow keys…offset it one pixel down and one to the right.

Now copy that same layer that you just offset…drag the copy under it…do the same offset. Keep doing this until you get the desired depth of 3D. Now merge all of the “offset” layers…make sure you dont merge the top-most “master” layer.

Now…take your burn and dodge tool and add highlights and shadows to the merged layers to the effect that you want so it looks more 3D. I like a variation of wide and thin soft brushes alternating between highlight and shadow, but play with it…I think you will like it.

Make sure you save a copy with all layers at some point…then when you get the desired look…merge it all and you will have a great…poormans 3D logo.

  • Man I looked thru the manual and did not see squat after a freeze frame search. The Cow is better than any manual and almost as fast.

Thanks for all the tips though…you guys are great.

    Love the Cow.

  • I thought about that…just exporting to photoshop…etc., but I would think there would be maybe a faster/easier way within FCP.

    Wishful thinking I guess…lol.
