    the pop out monitor already chews up quite a bit of the picture. if you mean “underscan” the answer is no. i suggest using the viewfinder for composition work, and the side monitor and a basic colour check and confidence monitor. nothing critical, the monitor is really low quality.

    you will not want anamorphic checked on an HD project. your project video is already 16:9. unlike an SD project you only have 540×468 and we apply anamorphic to it to make it 16:9. the reason it was anamorphic was a result of a miss checked box in you capture preset..

    I think I would have to say still too early.. I can give a little on the stations side of the coin. I would say market 75 and up are fully equipped for FTP spots in HD. below 75 is still a gamble. even in the larger markets the lesser stations in the market may not be equipped. It has been my experience the the FTP spots become a bigger problem for the stations at times. here’s why.. the original method with sd spots across the satellite usually has the Master control department catching the feed and then your creative services Dept tags and bags the spot(for us it was a once a week task of anywhere from 2 to 15 spots) then it goes to traffic as a tape to return to master control with it’s newly appointed in house code. in addition to our station, at times we were the “hub” for the market passing out dubs to the other 4-5 stations.

    In the FTP scenario, the creative dept is brought it at the acquisition phase because they are the department with FTP software and knowledge on data files and stuff. then hope the file doesn’t monopolize an editor for an hour downloading the spot. you will need to at some point put the spot through the editor and back to tape. My worry would be for a station that isn’t really broadcasting HD but up-converting their signal. god only knows how your file will be treated when the station is trying to down-convert , put it to sd tape, the up convert the commercial again.

    Needless to say I don’t envy you, but i agree that a good standard needs to be agreed upon and i think it still might be early.

    Multi-cam projects are extremely taxing on the system, Your combination of video size and resolution, the hard drive you are using, and your processor speed. I suggest that if i were starting from scratch, I’d capture in either, DV or offline resolution. whatever you can handle looking at, offline can be pretty crappy. then edit the project with multi-cam, collapse it, then send it through media manager so you can shed the excess footage. Then you can batch capture back in full resolution. 4 streams of DV footage seems to be about the most I could push my external HD running fire wire 800. any more than 4 and it begins to studder and skip after 3 or 4 min.

    If you cannot capture direct into FCP then I would consider taking your Vegas files and using media manager on them to create a down-res copy. then edit with the copy, after you are finished you could collapse, media manage just the same as before. but instead of re-capturing the files you would just re-connect to the original Vegas File.

    we purchased the HD version too, and were really disappointed about the “lack” of HD. I’ve talked to the Tech guys and they say that a big announcement/breakthrough it coming in the 708/608 captioning for HDSDI. (probably NAB) I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully to do captions on XDCAM disc as they describe, but i think the fault is mine. It seems the the Aja and Blackmagic problems may be over soon. i hope

    Not to continue the broken record, but Mac Caption. I haven’t found another software that can touch it. It is pricey, but when we we’re looking at 500-800$ per half hour show the math gets really easy when you are talkin’ about 13+ shows a year. The learning curve isn’t too steep and the company is easy to work with and constantly upgrading. (i have no connection to the company whatsoever)

  • to the best of my knowledge you must use the Sony software independent of FCP. The transfer software that you download doesn’t integrate into FCP like the P2 transfer does. I Primarily use the XD Discs but I think it’s about the same with sxs. Launch the software, fill in any meta data you wish then Import the footage in full resolution to the computer (this step is really changing the MXF wrapper to a MOV) after that you can import your footage into FCP like any other file.

    Thanks a lot that was a huge step forward, we had discovered the CC lines before but ignored the blanking setting above it in the menu. I haven’t found success yet But I’m closer. Thanks for you help

    PDW-F75 is the deck I am using, although I didn’t use that for the file transfer. I used a PDW-U1 to transfer in from final cut to XD disc. Mac Caption software created a method to where i can bring in the xd-cam file, caption it, then export in the same compression format. I am able to confirm captioning my pulling the newly created file into a “decode captioning” area where the software can strip the captioning data for a video file. this would allow someone to adjust an already captioned video. It also works as a “confirm captions are present” tool. Then i take the file into fCP and export to XD as usual. my problem is that when played from the deck, all digital captioning is not present. neither 608 or 708. so I’m wondering if there is a deck setting that I’m missing.

    I’m going to try and explain without sounding rude. I’m working with very capable captioning software and if you had read my post, you would have seen that my manufacture makes it possible to encode to XDCAM. I’m not speaking of the EX format. I’ve confirmed that the captioning that I have originated (not cross converted from another format) exists on the original file. Unfortunately I am unsure of any settings inside of the XDCAM deck that could strip the 708 from the HD-SDI. I’m looking for advice from someone working with captioning in the XDCAM format as to why I can see it in the original file, but it’s not passing through from the deck.
