Howdy, just a little confused at this point- Pal or NTSC??? Isnt it an HD camera? So it will shoot in HD, and the only thing which is different is the fps? Which isnt a Pal or NTSC thing…. I understand you’d have to change the fps if you wanted to convert for an NTSC DVD, but you’d also have to change a whole bunch of other stuff right, so it would be a job regardless of NTSC or PAL?

I’m working with FCP 6.0.6, and I’m quite new to FCP.

Start learning Avid- FCP is dead to me after FCPX.

I understand that, ideally, source and destination folders should be on separate hard drives, connected with Firewire; I suppose that has to do with speed and speed control. It’s more to do with your scratch (source)- when you edit you are seeking that stuff rapidly and repeatedly, so that’s the main thing to have in an external location. I assume by ‘destination’ you’re talking about exports/encodes, in which case theyre not really the concern. I mean, keep them organised, but unless you’re exporting a version every 10 minutes, dont worry too much.

I have two external hard drives, both Firewire 800/400 or USB; but I only have 1 FW800 port on my mac , and several FW400 and USB ports (my mac is an 4×2,5GGHz PowerPC G5 with 1,5 Gb DDR SD2 Ram, running on MacOS X 10.4.11, so not so recent anymore).

I know there are budget constraints, but that really is quite old now- if you have any ability to at all, I would suggest upgrading anything (whether it’s OS, FCP or most importantly hardware.

My question: What is the best solution in my case:
-Put source qnd destinqtion folder on 1 drive; connected to FW800?

Do that one. Although someone will probably now correct me…

Up to 5.0 Gb/s (Echo Pro ExpressCard/34)
Up to 2.5 Gb/s (Echo ExpressCard/34)

Yes countless reboots no Change. I did buy a new iMac yesterday and tried it on that mac with a 5 minute clip. Without checking the Self Contained Block my 5 minute encode created a MOV file that shows the first 3 seconds of the video and then stops but the audio keeps playing.

Wait are you saying this happens when the media drive is not connected? Cos that would be your problem. If not, I would try and reconnect everything on the timeline, even if it’s not offline- delete all render files too (as well as the usual stuff, prefs etc) then go from there. Also do you have the latest updates of everything?

I tried the export again this time to a second Firewire 800 drive, same results. Maybe it’s time to switch to X

Ive been in contact with Sonnet. They are releasing a 6Gb/s card which is fully compatible. Rather than going through the hassle of getting a brand new device and having to try and return/ sell on ebay my sonnet setup, Im going to get one of those cards. I will reports back here on my speed findings.

Of course, the Sonnet adapter also has the advantage of being an expresscard /34 slot, so for things like SxS cards and a few other peripherals, it has the edge. Juts not the speed at the moment!

Sorry if Im being silly here, but I think you may be getting mixed up? Adaptive streaming works by the streaming platform having the intelligence to switch between bitrates of video. To do this (as far as I know) it is literally switching between different versions of the same video, and those different versions have different bit rates. As such, you should just encode your video to a good quality H264 MP4 or MOV in compressor, and let the streaming platform do the rest. The only way of manually controlling it is to make your own versions and upload them, but I dont know of any platforms that let you do that.

Of course, that only works if they stay relatively same in shaep (ie dont turn their body). You may need to get creative with keyframing mask shape.

Ron- I checked yesterday and my internal drives are about 10 short of that :S – although Im hopeing thats because mine are 3/4’s full (if anyone cares to elaborate on that, would be great :D)

But yes, I’m getting about 180MBs read speed (my write speed’s about the same though – not much more than 70 ever).

If anyone gets hold of the Lacie version, PLEASE post your speeds here so we can make informed decisions on buying them (and rebelling against sonnet :D)
